    AbstractA thorough search for the cause of iron deficiency in the elderly is mandatory. With rare exceptions, iron deficiency in the elderly is due to gastrointestinal blood loss, the most serious and a frequent cause of which is gastrointestinal cancer. A peripheral blood film interpretation often provides important diagnostic clues. This diagnostic clue should not be disregarded.
