[Quo vadis--infant nutrition in the European Community? A comment on the guideline of the EC Commission on initial infant and subsequent nutrition].

AbstractThe new European Community guidelines on infant nutrition formulas, their contents and their declaration, effective since January 1993, do not indicate a scientifically sound progress in infant nutrition. Several of the contents listed (i.e. carbohydrates) may be of potential risk to health. In the future, European paediatricians will have to occupy themselves more concisely with the contents of marketed infant formulas. Individual solutions may have to be found for some patients.
