AbstractDilatation of the gut occurs in response to either mechanical obstruction or aperistalsis. The hallmark features are symptoms of bowel obstruction with vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain and distension. This review will primarily deal with the non-mechanical causes of gut dilatation, both intestinal and colonic, and differentiate between acute and chronic presentations.© Royal College of Physicians 2023.
