AbstractThe older patient requiring major orthopedic surgery for a hip fracture is at risk of poor outcome if special precautions are not taken during the perioperative period. Close attention must be paid to associated medical problems and the use of medications, especially during the postoperative period. Surgical success and rehabilitation with a return to a high level of function can be best assured through good cooperation between primary care physicians, internists, and orthopedic surgeons.
