AbstractMalnutrition has marked consequences on surgical outcomes. Adequate nutrition is important for the proper functioning of all organ systems, particularly the immune system. Determination of the type and amount of nutrient supplementation and the appropriate route of nutrient delivery is essential to bolster the immune system and enhance the host's response to stress. Correct administration of immunonutrients could lead to reductions in patient morbidity following major surgery, trauma, and critical illness.Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
