Clinical TrialEffects of rapid intravenous 100% L-isomer lactated Ringer's administration on plasma lactate concentrations in healthy dogs.
To determine if rapid intravenous administration of lactated Ringer's solution containing 28 mmol/L of l-lactate (L-LRS) can result in an increase in plasma lactate concentration in healthy dogs. ⋯ The rapid administration of intravenous L-LRS to healthy dogs significantly increases plasma lactate concentration within 10 minutes and returns to baseline values within 60 minutes after cessation of administration. This could have implications in how plasma lactate concentration is interpreted with respect to prognosis, particularly in patients receiving resuscitative rates of L-LRS. Interpretation of plasma lactate concentrations should be considered in light of the rate, quantity and type of fluid administered, and timing of blood samples.

Evaluation of acid-base disorders in dogs and cats presenting to an emergency room. Part 2: comparison of anion gap, strong ion gap, and semiquantitative analysis.
To compare the diagnostic performance of the anion gap (AG) with 2 physicochemical approaches to identify unmeasured anions. ⋯ Unmeasured anions occurred commonly in this sample of small animal emergency room patients and physiochemical approaches identified more animals with unmeasured anions than the traditional AG calculation. Further studies are needed to determine if the results of the physicochemical approach improves clinical management and warrants the associated increases in cost and complexity.

Evaluation of a rapid bedside scoring system for microcirculation videos acquired from dogs.
To appraise a novel scoring system (Bedside Evaluation of Microcirculation [BEM]) to provide qualitative and semiquantitative assessment of canine microcirculatory videos generated by sidestream dark field imaging. ⋯ Rapid bedside assessment of microcirculatory video quality can be achieved. However, semiquantitative analysis by BEM demonstrated a lack of correlation with CSA for any of the perfusion parameters assessed.

A comparison of tissue oxygen saturation measurements by 2 different near-infrared spectroscopy monitors in 21 healthy dogs.
To determine whether a difference exists in tissue oxygen saturation (StO2 ) measurements between 2 near-infrared spectroscopy monitors on the sartorius muscle in healthy dogs. ⋯ The INVOS significantly underestimates StO2 when compared to the Inspectra. Given this difference is on average 23.7%, StO2 cut off values used to guide therapy based on Inspectra readings cannot be applied to the INVOS. While there was a statistically significant difference in standing versus lateral positions on both devices, it is unlikely to be clinically significant. Studies using different devices should not be directly compared, and it is important to use the same monitor when taking serial measurements.

A comparison of traditional and quantitative analysis of acid-base imbalances in hypoalbuminemic dogs.
To compare the traditional (HH) and quantitative approaches used for the evaluation of the acid-base balance in hypoalbuminemic dogs. ⋯ The agreement between the HH and quantitative methods for interpretation of acid-base balance was poor and many imbalances detected using the quantitative approach were missed using the HH approach. Further studies are necessary to confirm the clinical utility of using the quantitative approach in the decision-making process of the severely ill hypoalbuminemic patients.
