Evaluation of the Lactate Plus monitor for plasma lactate concentration measurement in dogs.
To compare the Lactate Plus handheld monitor to a reference blood gas analyzer for determining plasma lactate concentrations in canine whole blood. ⋯ The Lactate Plus provides a fast and affordable method to measure plasma lactate concentration in dogs. Results showed excellent agreement with the reference analyzer and precision of the instrument was acceptable.

Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of the effects of a balanced crystalloid-based and a saline-based tetrastarch solution on canine whole blood coagulation and platelet function.
To evaluate the effects of a 6% hydroxyethyl starch (130/0.42) solution in either a buffered, electrolyte-balanced (HES-BAL), or a saline (HES-SAL) carrier solution on canine platelet function and whole blood coagulation. ⋯ Administration of a single bolus of 15 mL/kg 6% HES 130/0.42 results in significant but short-lived impairment of canine platelet function and whole blood coagulation, regardless of carrier solution.

Retrospective evaluation of the use of glucagon infusion as adjunctive therapy for hypoglycemia in dogs: 9 cases (2005-2014).
To describe the use of glucagon infusion for adjunctive treatment of hypoglycemia in dogs. ⋯ Glucagon CRI was accompanied by an increase in BG in hypoglycemic dogs. Glucagon CRI appears to be a safe method and can be readily utilized in most practice settings.

Assessment of method reliability and determination of reference intervals for rotational thromboelastometry in horses.
To assess the measurement reliability of rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) measurements in horses, establish reference intervals for healthy horses, and evaluate the relationship between ROTEM variables, hematologic variables, and standard coagulation tests. ⋯ ROTEM is a feasible method to evaluate coagulation in horses. Its measurement reliability is acceptable, but device-related measurement variability has to be considered. Reference intervals are presented, but the influence of hematocrit, platelet count, and fibrinogen concentration may need to be taken into account when interpreting individual test results.

A pilot study evaluating the use of cervical ultrasound to confirm endotracheal intubation in dogs.
To assess the accuracy and usability of cervical ultrasound as a means to confirm endotracheal (ET) intubation in dogs. ⋯ Cervical ultrasound has high sensitivity and moderate specificity for ET intubation, and may be a useful tool to confirm ET intubation in dogs.
