We describe and analyze Listeria-related demographics and clinical features to determine the predisposing conditions for severe infections. ⋯ Infections caused by L. monocytogenes were uncommon but could cause severe sepsis and mortality, especially in susceptible populations. Our study focused on neurological involvement and severe invasive forms of listeriosis. Neuroinvasive forms were the most important risk factors for severe illness but not for mortality.

C-reactive protein level predicts 30-day mortality and bleeding in patients with venous thromboembolism: A prospective single-center study.
The association of on-admission CRP and early adverse outcomes in acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) has not been investigated. We hypothesized that increased on-admission CRP levels would correlate with adverse outcomes in patients with acute VTE. ⋯ Our findings suggest that on-admission CRP level may be a simple, widely available and valuable biomarker to identify high-risk VTE patients for early mortality and bleeding. CRP ≥5mg/dL was independently associated with 30-day VTE related death and bleeding.

Disorders of the visual system are one of the main features of multiple sclerosis (MS), and have a great impact on the quality of life of patients. Although optic neuritis is the most frequent manifestation, there are other ophthalmological processes not related to neuritis, a knowledge of which is very useful in the management of patients with MS. These abnormalities are described, grouped into impairments of the afferent pathway, efferent pathway, or upper cerebral areas. Additionally, the main ophthalmological side effects of the drugs currently used in the control of MS are described.

We aimed to explore the impact of the time interval between symptoms and diagnosis on post-operative infective endocarditis (IE) survival. ⋯ The association in the Kaplan-Meier analysis between "early-diagnosis group" and mortality suggests that this group of patients presents clinical characteristics of severity that, on the one hand, speed up the diagnostic process and on the other, converge in the determination of a higher euroSCORE II value, which is the only independent predictor of mid-term mortality according to our analysis.
