The rs1862513 promoter variant of resistin gene influences susceptibility to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the term used for a range of conditions in which fat builds up in the liver and exceeds 5% of hepatocytes without inordinate alcohol intake or other causes of lipid accumulation. Regarding the fact that insulin resistance and obesity play key roles in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as the connection between resistin and these metabolic diseases, the association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and a resistin gene (RETN) polymorphism was examined. ⋯ We found for the first time an association between biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and RETN -420C>G promoter polymorphism. The carriers of the RETN -420C>G "CC" genotype had a 53% decreased risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Our findings, however, need to be corroborated by further studies.

Transfusion of packed red blood cells in adults with sickle cell anemia treated at an emergency hospital.
The aim of this study was to analyze the prescription of packed red blood cells performed by emergency physicians for adults with sickle cell anemia. ⋯ This study found low adequacy in the indication and calculation of the transfusion volume of packed red blood cells in asymptomatic individuals. Few patients received filtered red blood cells, resulting in increased risks of transfusion reactions. On the contrary, non-indicated subtypes were prescribed in a quarter of transfusions, which resulted in higher costs and delay in receiving packed red blood cells.

Effect of obesity on mood regulation and eating attitudes in mental disorders.
The precise relationship between obesity and eating habits, attitudes, and emotion regulation is still ambiguous. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible correlations among body mass index, challenges related to managing emotions, and attitudes toward eating among adult participants with known psychiatric diagnoses. ⋯ While a partial and meaningful correlation was observed among body mass index, eating attitudes, and emotion regulation difficulties, it is suggested that factors such as patients' age, disease duration, current body mass index, and the simultaneous presence of depression and anxiety should be considered.

The effects of leptin and cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist/antagonist in cerebral tissues of epileptic rats.
In this study, the effects of leptin, cannabinoid-1 (CB1) receptor agonist ACEA and antagonist AM251, and the interactions between leptin and CB1 receptor agonist/antagonist on oxidant and antioxidant enzymes in the cerebrum, cerebellum, and pedunculus cerebri tissue samples were investigated in the penicillin-induced epileptic model. ⋯ It was concluded that leptin reversed the effect of ACEA on oxidative stress. Co-administration of AM251 and leptin did not change oxidative stress compared with the AM251-treated group suggesting AM251 and leptin affect oxidative stress using the same pathways.
