Epidemiological analysis of congenital syphilis in the State of Paraná, Brazil.
Congenital syphilis is a complex public health issue caused by the transmission of Treponema pallidum. Brazil has high incidence rates, with a distinct transmission pattern surpassing other notifiable diseases. ⋯ Paraná State serves as a representative sample of this epidemiological situation, providing significant insights into the intricacies of congenital syphilis incidence. Further comparative investigations including diverse regions within Brazil are necessary.

Inferior vena cava collapsibility index and trauma severity in elderly fall injuries.
Falls are a serious cause of morbidity and mortality among older people. One of the underlying causes of falls is dehydration. Therefore, ultrasonography has become an essential tool for evaluating volume status in the emergency department. However, the effect of volume status on falls in older people has not been evaluated before. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the inferior vena cava collapsibility index and the injury severity score in older patients who presented with fall-related injuries to the emergency department. ⋯ Inferior vena cava collapsibility index cannot be used to predict trauma severity in older patients who have experienced falls admitted to the emergency department.

Efficacy of probiotics, paraprobiotics, and postbiotics in colorectal cancer cell line and their role in immune response.
The aim of this study was to reveal certain features (anti-tumor/microbial activities) of postbiotics and heat-inactivated paraprobiotics obtained from two different bacteria with determined probiotic properties, which are thought to contribute to human health. ⋯ Our study shows that biotics, which are widely used and beneficial to health, are also available for use in immunocompromised individuals. The resulting paraprobiotics and postbiotics will both increase the conscious use of probiotics and provide the opportunity for use in immunocompromised individuals.

Evaluation of some immunological markers in co-infection of COVID-19 with thrush candidiasis.
COVID-19 infection poses significant risks, including life-threatening consequences and fungus synchronization, making it a significant concern. This study seeks to assess the effect of concurrent infection of COVID-19 with Thrush Candida albicans on the patient's health state by measuring the proportion of immune cells and certain interleukins such as IL-8, -10, -17, and -33. ⋯ Patient groups showed increased neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and IL-8 levels, with a significant linear association between proinflammatory interleukins and these cells.

Observational StudyA preliminary study on the association between prognostic nutritional index and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio with nutritional status and inflammation in febrile children's susceptibility to seizures.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between nutritional status, inflammation, and susceptibility to seizures in febrile children. ⋯ High neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio values and low prognostic nutritional index scores may serve as novel surrogate independent factors for seizure susceptibility in febrile children. Febrile children who are less than 18 months old are more prone to experience seizures than older febrile children. Moreover, there was a correlation between febrile seizures and elevated C-reactive protein levels and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio values.
