The long-term risk of cancer in patients with a first episode of venous thromboembolism.
In patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE), 15-20% will have prevalent cancer when VTE is diagnosed but little is known about such patients' long-term risk, time course and predictors of new cancer. ⋯ In patients with a first VTE and without prevalent cancer, the risk for new cancer is about 1-2% per year, appears to be uniform over time, and is higher in patients with unprovoked VTE and those with advanced age.

Comparative StudyrFVIIa and a new enhanced rFVIIa-analogue, NN1731, reduce bleeding in clopidogrel-treated and in thrombocytopenic rats.
The pharmacological effect of rFVIIa occurs at the surface of activated platelets by enhancing thrombin generation at the site of vascular damage. It is therefore important to study the effects of rFVIIa in platelet-related bleeding situations. We examined the effect of rFVIIa and an rFVIIa-analogue, NN1731, on clopidogrel-induced and thrombocytopenic bleeding in rats. ⋯ The hemostatic effect of rFVIIa and NN1731 was demonstrated in thrombocytopenic and clopidogrel-treated rats, showing efficacy in situations with decreased platelet number or functionality. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that rFVIIa/NN1731 contribute to hemostasis by thrombin generation even in situations with platelet disorders. Furthermore, NN1731 demonstrated a higher hemostatic potential than rFVIIa.

Multicenter StudyCardiac biomarkers for risk stratification in non-massive pulmonary embolism: a multicenter prospective study.
Troponins (cTnI and cTnT), N-terminal pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP), myoglobin, heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) and fibrin D-Dimer are emergent candidates for risk stratification in pulmonary embolism (PE). ⋯ NT-proBNP appears to be a good risk stratification marker in identifying low-risk patients with non-massive PE who could be treated in an outpatient setting.

Development of fibrinogen gamma-chain peptide-coated, adenosine diphosphate-encapsulated liposomes as a synthetic platelet substitute.
The dodecapeptide HHLGGAKQAGDV (H12), corresponding to the fibrinogen gamma-chain carboxy-terminal sequence (gamma 400-411), is a specific binding site of the ligand for platelet GPIIb/IIIa complex. We have evaluated H12-coated nanoparticles (polymerized albumin or liposome) as platelet function-supporting synthetic products. ⋯ H12-(ADP)-liposome may thus offer a promising platelet substitute, being made with only synthetic materials and exerting hemostatic functions in vivo via reinforcement of primary thrombus formation by residual platelets in thrombocytopenia at sites of vascular injury, but not in circulation.
