Sphingosine-1-phosphate signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 signaling pathway contributes to baicalein-mediated inhibition of dextran sulfate sodium-induced experimental colitis in mice.
Baicalein has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. However, the mechanisms underlying its anti-inflammatory effect on colitis remain unclear. ⋯ Baicalein treatment ameliorated colitis in mice by inhibiting S1P-STAT3 signaling, suggesting that this flavonoid might be beneficial in the treatment of colitis.

ReviewPancreatic and duodenal homeobox-1 in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes mellitus and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma are two common diseases worldwidely which are both derived from different components of pancreas. The pancreatic and duodenal homeobox-1 (PDX1) is an essential transcription factor for the early development of pancreas that is required for the differentiation of all pancreatic cell lineages. Current evidence suggests an important role of PDX1 in both the origin and progression of pancreatic diseases. In this review, we discussed recent studies of PDX1 in diabetes mellitus and pancreatic cancer, and the therapeutic strategies derived from this transcription factor.

Impact of hepatitis C virus genotype 3 on liver disease progression in a Chinese national cohort.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 3, particularly subtype 3b, is increasing in prevalence and distribution in China. This study evaluated the prevalence, regional distribution, clinical characteristics, host factors, treatment outcomes, and disease progression of patients with HCV genotype 3 in China. ⋯ HCV genotype 3, specifically subtype 3b, is associated with more rapid progression of liver disease. Further analysis to compare HCV subtype 3a and 3b is needed in high prevalence regions.

Semaphorin 3A-hypoxia inducible factor 1 subunit alpha co-overexpression enhances the osteogenic differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells-derived mesenchymal stem cells in vitro.
Mesenchymal stem or stromal cells (MSCs) derived from the induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have uniform biological activity, which makes the clinical application of MSCs in bone repair possible. Culturing the iPSC-MSCs onto osteoconductive materials is a promising tissue engineering-based strategy in bone regeneration. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) and hypoxia inducible factor 1 subunit alpha (HIF1α) co-overexpression on the survival and osteogenic differentiation of iPSC-MSCs. ⋯ Modifying iPSC-MSCs with pro-osteogenic (Sema3A) and pro-survival (HIF1α) factors may represent a promising strategy to optimize tissue engineering-based strategy in bone repair.
