Solitary skeletal osteosarcoma recurrence. Findings from the Cooperative Osteosarcoma Study Group.
Solitary skeletal osteosarcoma (OS) manifestations distant from the site of the primary tumor rarely arise as only sign of disease recurrence. ⋯ First solitary skeletal recurrences of OS should be treated with curative intent. Some presumed bone metastases may represent second primary OSs.

The impact of a multidisciplinary pain management model on sickle cell disease pain hospitalizations.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) pain is acute or chronic, leads to school absenteeism, impaired health-related quality of life and early mortality. Given that little is known about children with SCD and chronic pain, we (1) described characteristics of these children and (2) evaluated the impact of a multidisciplinary pain management model on health care utilization. ⋯ A multidisciplinary pain management model appears to have decreased SCD pain hospitalizations. Results of this retrospective study will need to be tested in a prospective randomized trial.

Point of care testing in children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass.
Excessive hemorrhage is a major complication after cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The aim of this study was to define the potential role of the cone and platelet analyzer (CPA) and the rotating thromboelastogram (ROTEM) point of care tests in children undergoing CPB. ⋯ CPA did not serve as a prognostic tool for predicting bleeding risk in children undergoing CPB. The change in ROTEM's post-CPB results associated with bleeding tendency, and they may predict for poorer clot formation and stability.
