Comparative StudyComparison of (18) F-FDG-PET-CT and Bone Scintigraphy for Evaluation of Osseous Metastases in Newly Diagnosed and Recurrent Osteosarcoma.
Bone scintigraphy (BS) is used to detect osseous metastases in osteosarcoma. (18) F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography-computed tomography ((18) F-FDG-PET-CT) is being increasingly used for staging. We compared the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of (18) F-FDG-PET-CT and BS for detecting osseous metastases in osteosarcoma. ⋯ (18) F-FDG-PET-CT demonstrated superior sensitivity over BS for detecting osseous metastases, supporting the use of (18) F-FDG-PET-CT for staging of osteosarcoma.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyA Phase 3, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study to Determine the Effect of Romiplostim on Health-Related Quality of Life in Children with Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia and Associated Burden in Their Parents.
Chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in children can negatively impact their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and impose a burden on their parents. This study sought to examine the effect of romiplostim on HRQoL and parental burden in children with primary ITP. ⋯ The treatment with romiplostim may be associated with improved HRQoL in children with primary ITP and reduced burden to their parents.

Clinical TrialContinuous Lidocaine Infusions to Manage Opioid-Refractory Pain in a Series of Cancer Patients in a Pediatric Hospital.
Research on the safety and efficacy of continuous lidocaine infusions (CLIs) for the treatment of pain in the pediatric setting is limited. This article describes a series of pediatric oncology patients who received lidocaine infusions for refractory, longstanding, cancer-related pain. ⋯ CLIs were a helpful adjuvant in the four cases presented and may be an effective therapy for a more diverse array of refractory cancer pain. The majority of patients experienced pain relief well beyond the metabolic elimination of the lidocaine, corroborating a modulation effect on pain windup. Additional research regarding infusion rates, serum concentrations, side effects, and outpatient follow-up in a larger group of patients will provide additional insight into the role and safety of this therapy in children.

Case ReportsMammalian Target of Rapamycin Inhibitor Induced Complete Remission of a Recurrent Subependymal Giant Cell Astrocytoma in a Patient Without Features of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.
The majority of patients with subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA) have tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). In such patients, the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor everolimus has been shown to induce responses. Isolated SEGA have been reported in patients without clinical or genetic features of TSC. ⋯ The patient tolerated therapy well and had a sustained complete remission. MTOR inhibitors may be useful for the treatment of isolated SEGA. Further study is warranted.

Initial Evaluation of the Pediatric PROMIS® Health Domains in Children and Adolescents With Sickle Cell Disease.
The Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) has developed pediatric self-report scales measuring several unidimensional health attributes (domains) suitable for use in clinical research, but these measures have not yet been validated in sickle cell disease (SCD). ⋯ PROMIS pediatric measures are feasible in a research setting and identify expected differences in known group comparisons in a sample of SCD children. The large domain score differences between those with or without SCD-related complications suggest the potential usefulness of these measures in clinical research, but further validation studies are needed, particularly in clinical practice settings.
