The role of geraniol on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury model in rats.
Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a significant clinical condition that can arise during liver resections, trauma, and shock. Geraniol, an isoterpene molecule commonly found in nature, possesses antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties. This study investigates the impact of geraniol on hepatic damage by inducing experimental liver I/R injury in rats. ⋯ The study demonstrates that geraniol reduced hepatic damage both biochemically and histopathologically and increased antioxidant defense enzymes. These findings suggest that geraniol could be used to prevent hepatic I/R injury, provided it is corroborated by large-scale and comprehensive studies.

Evaluation of the effects of ectopic replantation on amputate survival in the management of crush traumatic amputations in rats: An experimental study.
This controlled experimental study aimed to compare ectopic replantation with other replantation techniques in a rat model of crush amputations. It also assessed the impact of different replantation methods on the viability of amputates. ⋯ The results indicate that ectopic replantation and replantation with a vein graft are equally effective. The preferred method for crush-type replantations may depend on the patient's and the amputated limb's conditions. In crush-type amputations, we recommend vein graft repair if the patient's overall condition supports replantation and if crushed segments can be debrided without excessive shortening of the amputated part. If these conditions are not met, temporary ectopic replantation is advised to preserve the amputated limb.

Comparative StudyComparison of the efficacy of royal jelly and melatonin combinations in experimentally induced wounds in geriatric and young mice.
Wound healing involves the repair of skin and other soft tissues after an injury. Royal jelly, a product of bees, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Melatonin, a circadian indoleamine, is produced in the pineal gland and other organs. This study explores the effects of melatonin and royal jelly, both individually and combined, on wound healing in geriatric and young mice. ⋯ The findings suggest a potential new therapeutic approach to enhance wound healing, particularly in elderly individuals. However, these findings need to be supported through further research and clinical trials.

Determinants of 30-day mortality in elderly patients admitted to a cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit.
This study aims to identify the factors influencing 30-day morbidity and mortality in patients aged 65 and older undergoing cardiovascular surgery. ⋯ By optimizing preoperative renal function, minimizing extubation time, shortening ICU stays, and carefully managing blood transfusions, surgical reexplorations, aortic clamp duration, and HbA1c levels, we believe that the mortality rate can be reduced in elderly patients. Key strategies include shortening aortic clamp times, reducing perioperative blood transfusions, and ensuring effective bleeding control.

Review Case ReportsChronic jejuno-colonic fistula and intestinal malabsorption due to multiple magnet ingestions: A case report and systematic review.
Magnet ingestion in children can lead to serious complications, both acutely and chronically. This case report discusses the treatment approach for a case involving multiple magnet ingestions, which resulted in a jejuno-colonic fistula, segmental intestinal volvulus, hepa-tosteatosis, and renal calculus detected at a late stage. Additionally, we conducted a literature review to explore the characteristics of intestinal fistulas caused by magnet ingestion. ⋯ In 29 cases, the time of magnet ingestion was unknown. Among the 26 cases with a known ingestion time, the average duration until fistula detection was 22.8 days (range: 1-90 days). Fistula repairs were performed via laparotomy in 47 cases.
