Excess risk of major vascular diseases associated with airflow obstruction: a 9-year prospective study of 0.5 million Chinese adults.
China has high COPD rates, even among never-regular smokers. Little is known about nonrespiratory disease risks, especially vascular morbidity and mortality after developing airflow obstruction (AFO) in Chinese adults. ⋯ Among adult Chinese, AFO was associated with significantly increased risks of major vascular morbidity and mortality. COPD management should be integrated with vascular disease prevention and treatment programs to improve long-term prognosis.

Comparative StudyComparative effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers on the risk of pneumonia and severe exacerbations in patients with COPD.
This study aimed to compare the effects of angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) on the risk of pneumonia and severe exacerbations in patients with COPD. ⋯ ARBs were associated with lower rates of pneumonia, severe pneumonia, and mortality than ACEis in patients with COPD.

Comparative Study Observational StudyImpact of using the new GOLD classification on the distribution of COPD severity in clinical practice.
The objective of this study was to examine how COPD patients were classified by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) spirometry-based severity system and the distribution of COPD severity using the new GOLD 2011 assessment framework. ⋯ Classifying patients using the new GOLD 2011 criteria reallocated a relevant proportion of patients to a different risk category and identified larger proportions of patients in the mildest and more severe groups compared with GOLD 2007 classification.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffectiveness of water-based Liuzijue exercise on respiratory muscle strength and peripheral skeletal muscle function in patients with COPD.
The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the effects of water-based Liuzijue exercise on patients with COPD and compare it with land-based Liuzijue exercise. ⋯ Water-based Liuzijue exercise has beneficial effects on COPD patients' respiratory muscle strength and peripheral skeletal muscle function, and additional benefits may exist in endurance of upper limbs and strength and endurance of lower limbs when compared with land-based Liuzijue exercise.

Comparative StudyRisk factors predict frequent hospitalization in patients with acute exacerbation of COPD.
COPD is a heterogeneous disease, and the available prognostic indexes are therefore limited. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with acute exacerbation leading to hospitalization. ⋯ Exacerbation hospitalizations in the past year and imaging features of emphysema (EI) were independently associated with FE hospitalization.
