Obesity is a major health priority in the United States, as well as globally. It is associated with multiple comorbidities and reduced life expectancy. Effective management of obesity involves producing an intervention plan tailored to the individual patient. ⋯ Adjunctive therapies in the form of pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery are required in patients who do not achieve targeted weight loss and health goals with lifestyle interventions. Currently there are 3 drugs approved for long-term management of obesity, orlistat, phentermine/topiramate extended release, and lorcaserin, and there are 2 on the horizon, bupropion/naltrexone and liraglutide. Bariatric surgery is an effective strategy recognized to produce durable weight loss with amelioration of obesity-related comorbidities and should be considered a treatment option in eligible patients.

Clinical TrialEffects of a pulmonary rehabilitation program with balance training on patients with COPD.
Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have balance impairments. However, pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is associated with only minor improvements in functional balance. Therefore, there is a need to explore the role of balance training within PR. This study aimed at assessing the effects of a PR program, with a specific component of balance training, on functional balance of patients with COPD. ⋯ Pulmonary rehabilitation with a specific component of balance training had a large effect on functional balance in patients with COPD. Findings highlight the value of including balance training in PR programs. Further research is needed to determine the optimal intervention to improve balance and its specific components among patients with COPD.

Comparative StudyComparison of cardiorespiratory responses during aquatic and land treadmill exercise in patients with coronary artery disease.
To investigate cardiorespiratory responses during exercise stress tests using an aquatic treadmill and a land-based treadmill in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). ⋯ This study demonstrated that aquatic treadmill exercise elicits similar peak cardiorespiratory responses compared with land treadmill exercise, suggesting that aquatic treadmill exercise may be effective for CAD patients in cardiac rehabilitation.
