Multicenter StudyCurrent practice in neurocritical care of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage and severe traumatic brain injury : Results of the Austrian Neurosurvey Study.
The task force Neuroanaesthesia of the Austrian Society of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care Medicine (ÖGARI) is aiming to develop and provide recommendations in order to improve neurocritical care in Austria. Thus, a survey on neurocritical care concepts in Austria regarding intensive care of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) was performed to assess the current status. ⋯ Definitive care of SAH and TBI patients is achieved timely in Austria. When compared with SAH, more hospitals with lower case loads take care of TBI patients. Written guidelines and protocols at institutional level are often missing. Since routine morbidity and mortality conferences are sparse, and long-term outcome is not assessed, there is room for improvement.

Significance of gender in the attitude towards doctor-patient communication in medical students and physicians.
Gender-specific differences in the attitudes towards doctor-patient communication among medical students and physicians were assessed. ⋯ This study indicates a gender-dependent communication style influenced by stereotypes. At the establishment of communication training these differences should be taken into account, especially to strengthen male communication skills and improve their attitudes.

Observational StudyPrevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Slovak women with polycystic ovary syndrome and its relation to metabolic and reproductive abnormalities.
To investigate prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its relation to clinical, anthropometrical, and biochemical findings in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and controls. ⋯ Insulin resistance and other metabolic abnormalities in PCOS women seem to be related to PCOS rather than to vitamin D deficiency.

Multicenter StudyTracheostomy is associated with decreased hospital mortality after moderate or severe isolated traumatic brain injury.
Data regarding the impact and timing of tracheostomy in patients with isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI) are ambiguous. Our goal was to evaluate the impact of tracheostomy on hospital mortality in patients with moderate or severe isolated TBI. ⋯ Despite the greater severity of head injury, patients with isolated TBI who underwent tracheostomy had a lower risk-adjusted mortality than patients who remained intubated. Reasons for this difference in outcome may be multifactorial and require further investigation.

Observational StudyCinnarizine and dimenhydrinate in the treatment of vertigo in medical practice.
The efficacy and safety of the fixed combination of cinnarizine 20 mg and dimenhydrinate 40 mg in the treatment of vertigo of various origins have been investigated in a prospective, noninterventional study involving private practices throughout Germany. A total of 1275 patients with an average age of 61.2 years participated in the study. The vertigo symptoms, measured by a validated mean vertigo score (primary efficacy endpoint) improved by 61 % in the course of the observational period (median: 6 weeks). ⋯ Overall efficacy has been rated by the physicians as 'very much improved' or 'much improved' in 95 % of the patients. A total of 47 patients (3.7 %) reported 51 adverse drug reactions (all nonserious). The results indicate a good tolerability and efficacy of the fixed combination of cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate in the treatment of vertigo in daily medical practice, which is in line with previous findings of numerous interventional, randomised, double-blind, controlled clinical trials.
