Observational StudyPostoperative immunosuppression markers and the occurrence of sepsis in patients with benign and malignant disease.
To investigate associations between the postoperative immune response and the levels of extracellular circulating DNA (cDNA), C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio, and regulatory T (Treg) cells in the peripheral blood and their role as potential predictors of postoperative septic complications. ⋯ Our results suggest that the immunosuppressive effect of surgery and the presence of a malignant disease may contribute to a higher risk of postoperative sepsis. Preoperative CRP levels may be a reliable predictor of sepsis in oncological patients.

Emergency (clonal spread) of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended spectrum (ESBL)--and AmpC beta-lactamase-producing Gram-negative bacteria infections at Pediatric Department, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended-spectrum (ESBL) and plasmid-mediated AmpC beta-lactamase producing Gram-negative bacteria in children. ⋯ Pediatric infections caused by clonal spread of MRSA and beta-lactamase-producing Gram-negative bacteria are of major concern. Proper infection control measures should be implemented in order to avoid the transmission and major outbreaks.

A severe case of esophageal ulcer causing a tight stricture despite long-term D-penicillamine treatment.
D-penicillamine has long been used in the management of rheumatic diseases due to the effects on inhibition of collagen synthesis. Herein, we report a severe case of esophageal ulcer causing a tight stricture extending through the distal esophagus despite the long-term D-penicillamine treatment in a patient with Wilson's disease. D-penicillamine would theoretically be expected to contribute to the healing of an esophageal ulcer. However, the drug failed to have a favorable outcome, which is notable and worth reporting.

Case ReportsLiver abscess following radioembolization with yttrium-90 microspheres.
Radioembolization with yttrium-90 microspheres is an accepted and useful intervention model with minimal invasion in both primary and secondary liver malignancies. Radioembolization may lead to some complications. Liver abscess is a rare complication that can occur several weeks after radioembolization treatment of liver tumor with yttrium-90 microspheres. There are only a few case reports on hepatic liver abscess observed in early term of radioembolization treatment, and our case also constitutes a rare report that may contribute to the possible future improvements in radioembolization field to get more insight into the current understanding of the formation of some deleterious insults such as hepatic abscess.
