Surgical quality data and survival after pancreatic cancer resections: a comparison of results for octogenarians and younger patients.
Although age is no contraindication for pancreatic cancer resections, there are conflicting reports of morbidity and mortality rates and only few data showing direct comparisons of survival for octogenarians and patients younger than 80 years. ⋯ In an interdisciplinary setting, surgical quality data and survival after pancreatic cancer resections are comparable in octogenarians and patients younger than 80 years.

Thoracic periaortic adipose tissue in relation to cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
To evaluate thoracic periaortic adipose tissue (TAT) burden in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in comparison with controls and in relation to cardiovascular risk factors. ⋯ In conclusion, our findings indicate significantly higher values for TAT in diabetics than controls, being associated positively with body weight, poor glycemic control, and dyslipidemia and strongly predicted by HbA1c levels in diabetic patients, while not differing with respect to gender, smoking status, and concomitant hypertension.

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and Pneumocystis jirovecii carriage in renal transplantation patients: a single-centre experience.
The Pneumocystis pneumonia is an increasing problem in transplanted patients: up to 25% suffer from Pneumocystis pneumonia, occurring during the first 6 months after transplantation. ⋯ Pneumocystis pneumonia was present in 33.3% of transplanted patients with suspected pneumonia. An association between acute rejection or co-infections and Pneumocystis pneumonia or carriage in patients after renal transplantation cannot be excluded. In three out of seven Pneumocystis pneumonia patients, an overlapping of hospitalisation times and an onset of Pneumocystis pneumonia 6 months after transplantation was found. Thus, person-to-person transmission seems probable in these cases.

[Consensus statement: Stroke prevention in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in special consideration of the new direct oral anticoagulants].
The introduction of new direct oral anticoagulants has changed the treatment of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. However, these changes are not yet fully reflected in current guidelines. ⋯ For a CHA2DS2-VASc-Score of ≥ 2, anticoagulation is recommended with a high level of evidence (1A). At the end of the consensus statement, recommendations for a number of specific patient subgroups can be found, in order to help treating physicians to arrive at appropriate therapeutic decisions.

[Recommendations of the Austrian Society of Rheumatology/Austrian Radiology-Rheumatology Initiative for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for the application of ultrasound in rheumatology].
It is the current goal in rheumatology to diagnose and treat inflammatory rheumatic diseases early in order to avoid structural damage. Functional imaging methods such as musculoskeletal sonography are increasingly used to support the clinical diagnosis. To ascertain the quality of ultrasound assessments performed by rheumatologists in Austria, the Austrian Radiology-Rheumatology Initiative for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (ARRIMUS) proposed recommendations for a training curriculum, technical standards for ultrasound equipment, minimum requirements for documentation, indications for sonography and the use of ultrasound for interventions. These recommendations have been endorsed by the Austrian Society of Rheumatology and should aid rheumatologists to perform high quality ultrasound assessment in clinical practice.
