Subclinical inflammation in obesity is critical for development of several obesity-associated disorders. We set out to investigate the effect of pronounced weight loss on circulating chemerin levels, a chemoattractant protein that also influences adipose cell function by paracrine and autocrine mechanisms. ⋯ We hypothesize that weight-loss induced reduction in circulating chemerin might in conjunction with other factors be associated with diminished recruitment of macrophages in adipose tissue and reduction of subclinical inflammation, which again could partly explain beneficial long-term effects of weight reduction in obese subjects.

ReviewIndustry sponsorship and selection of comparators in randomized clinical trials.
Most clinical trials on medical interventions are sponsored by the industry. The choice of comparators shapes the accumulated evidence. We aimed to assess how often major companies sponsor trials that involve only their own products. ⋯ Each company generates a clinical research agenda that is strongly focused on its own products, while comparisons involving different interventions from different companies are uncommon. This diminishes the ability to understand the relative merits of different interventions for the same condition.

Urinary L-FABP and anaemia: distinct roles of urinary markers in type 2 diabetes.
Urinary liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) and kidney injury molecule (KIM)-1, novel urinary biomarkers of renal tubulointerstitial function, have previously been associated with acute ischaemic kidney injury. We studied the clinical significance of urinary L-FABP, KIM-1 and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG) as potential markers of renal function and chronic ischaemic injury in patients with diabetic nephropathy. ⋯ Different urinary biomarkers may reflect distinct pathophysiological mechanisms of tubulointerstitial damage in early diabetic nephropathy: Urinary L-FABP could be a novel biomarker for chronic intrarenal ischaemia.

Acute exposure to cigarette smoke is related to airway and systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. Little is known about the acute effect of cigarette smoking in smoking asthmatics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute effect of smoking in airway and systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in normal smokers and patients with properly treated well-controlled persistent asthma. ⋯ Acute smoking has more deleterious effects in well-controlled properly treated asthmatic smokers compared with matched normal smokers.

Pim-3 protects against hepatic failure in D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-sensitized rats.
Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) has a high mortality resulted from massive hepatic apoptosis and haemorrhage necrosis; it is required to develop a valid therapy directed towards hepatocyte protection and regeneration. Pim-3, a hepatic growth stimulator, belongs to the serine/threonine kinase Pim-family that has been implicated in gp130-mediated induction of cell proliferation, protection from apoptosis downstream of Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and vascular endothelial growth factor-A-dependent vasculogenesis and angiogenesis, thus is suggested to possibly play a role in the tissue repair of FHF. ⋯ Pim-3 gene could protect rats from FHF by inhibiting liver apoptosis and improving inflammatory response of liver tissues, which could be associated with inhibiting expression of inflammatory mediators and promoting expression of anti-apoptosis protein Bcl-2.
