Pathogeny of thrombosis in COVID-19 is related to interaction of SARS-Cov-2 with vascular wall through the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. This induces 2 pathways with immunothrombosis from activated endothelium (cytokine storm, leukocyte and platelet recruitment, and activation of coagulation extrinsic pathway), and rise of angiotensin II levels promoting inflammation. While thrombosis is widely described in COVID-19 patients admitted in intensive care unit, cerebrovascular diseases remains rare, in particular cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). ⋯ CVT, as a serious complication of COVID-19, has to be searched in all patients with intracranial hypertension syndrome. Data about anticoagulation therapy to prevent such serious thrombosis in SARS-Cov-2 infection are lacking, in particular in patients with mild and moderate COVID-19.

Relationships between serum omentin-1 concentration, body composition and physical activity levels in older women.
This study aimed to investigate the relationships between omentin-1, body composition and physical activity (PA) levels in older women. Eighty-one older women (age = 64 ± 6years; body mass index = 24.2 ± 3.2 kg/m2; body fat percentage = 36.1 ± 5.7%) participated in this study. We divided the subjects into overweight/obesity and normal weight group. ⋯ We found that total body FM was inversely related to serum omentin-1 concentration and PA levels, but there was no correlation between omentin-1 and PA levels. These results showed that PA may participate in the regulation of body composition, which may be also affected by serum omentin-1. However, the mechanism by which PA affects body composition may not be through omentin-1 and was more likely through other metabolic pathways.

Necrotizing fasciitis secondary to lake water inoculation with Aeromonas sobria: A case report.
Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressing bacterial soft tissue infection with a high mortality rate. It is characterized by significant soft tissue destruction with associated sepsis. The mainstay of treatment is coverage with appropriate broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and emergent surgical debridement. ⋯ Close monitoring for NF is important for tissue infections sustained in aquatic environments. Timely identification and surgical management of NF increases overall survival.

The aim of this study was to discuss the correlation between the sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim resistance of Shigella flexneri (S. flexneri) and the antibiotic resistance genes sul1, sul2, and sul3 and SXT element. From May 2013 to October 2018, 102 isolates of S. flexneri were collected from the clinical samples in Jinan. The Kirby-Bauer (K-B) test was employed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of the S. flexneri isolates. ⋯ The sul3 gene and SXT element were not amplified from any of the isolates. The testing and statistical analysis showed that the resistance of the S. flexneri isolates to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim correlated to the sul1 and sul2 genes. The acquired antibiotic resistance genes sul1 and sul2 were closely associated with the resistance of the 102 S. flexneri isolates to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.

Mitochondrial diabetes mellitus (MDM) is characterized by maternal inheritance, progressive neurosensory deafness, insulin secretory disorder, and progressive microvascular complications. Mitochondria are critical organelles that provide energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). An impairment of ATP production in pancreatic β cells is regarded as the main cause of the insulin secretory disorder in patients with MDM, and these patients require insulin replacement therapy early after the diagnosis. The amino acid 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), a precursor of heme metabolites, is a non-proteinogenic δ amino acid synthesized in mitochondria. An addition of ferrous iron to 5-ALA enhances heme biosynthesis and increases ATP production through an upregulation of the respiratory complex. Several studies have reported that the administration of 5-ALA and ferrous iron to existing treatment improved the glycemic control in both patients with prediabetes and those with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The additional administration of 5-ALA and ferrous iron to MDM patients on insulin therapy may improve their insulin secretory capacity and glycemic control by improving their mitochondrial function. The findings of this study are expected to provide new treatment options for MDM and improve the patients' glycemic control and prognosis. ⋯ To the best of our knowledge, this study will be the first assessment of the effects of 5-ALA/SFC in patients with MDM. This study will obtain an evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of 5-ALA/SFC for patients with MDM.
