Randomized Controlled Trial
Dexmedetomidine improves lung compliance in patients undergoing lateral decubitus position of shoulder arthroscopy: A randomized controlled trial.
The improvement of oxygenation and pulmonary mechanics in patients under general anesthesia can be achieved by dexmedetomidine (DEX) infusion. However, its role in patients undergoing lateral supine shoulder arthroscopy has not been thoroughly studied. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of DEX on lung compliance in patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopic surgery in a lateral decubitus position. ⋯ DEX can improve lung compliance and reduce airway pressure and platform pressure of patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopy in the lateral position under general anesthesia.

Tuina has gained widespread attention and utilization for the management of chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP). However, evidence-based guidance for choosing accurate and appropriate outcome measures of Tuina is lacking. The objective of this study is to systematically synthesize the existing outcome measures reported in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating Tuina therapy in CNLBP. ⋯ Pain and physical disability were the most frequently studied outcome domains in CNLBP treated by Tuina therapy. More rigorous and high-quality trials with appropriately selected outcome measures are needed in the future.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in miliary tuberculosis (TB) remains rare, especially in pregnant women. The role of blood purification is potential in managing ARDS due to miliary TB. ⋯ This case underscores the potential role of blood purification in ARDS due to miliary TB in pregnancy.

Case Reports
An asymptomatic double-chambered left ventricle diagnosed by contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging: A case report.
The double-chambered left ventricle (DCLV) is a rare congenital heart disease and is separated into 2 chambers by abnormally hypertrophied bundles of muscle or fibrous strips. Differential diagnoses, especially diverticulum, aneurysms and large ventricular septal defect are sometimes difficult. ⋯ This case highlights the necessity of contrast-enhance ultrasound imaging, which plays an important role in improving the accuracy of DCLV diagnosis and in differentiating it from other diseases.

Observational Study
Differences in preoperative gastric ultrasound findings in elderly compared to the mid-aged surgical patients: A retrospective observational study.
This study aimed to compare gastric ultrasound assessments between young and elderly patients, to determine whether the cross-section area (CSA) cutoff values for elderly and young patients should be different, and to suggest CSA cutoff values for elderly patients. This study evaluated the data of 120 patients who underwent elective surgery under general anesthesia between July 2019 and August 2020. Demographic and gastric ultrasound assessment data were retrieved. ⋯ The CSA cutoff values for the elderly group were: CSAsupine, 6.92 cm2 and CSARLDP, 10.65 cm2. The CSA of the empty stomach was greater in elderly patients than in young patients. We suggest that the following CSA cutoff values should be used for predicting pulmonary aspiration risk in elderly patients: CSAsupine, 6.92 cm2 and CSARLDP, 10.65 cm2.
