This study aimed to explore whether 30-min rest breaks were as effective at lowering acute fatigue among 12-h shift hospital nursing staff who cared for patients with COVID-19 as among those who did not. ⋯ Rest breaks may present an effective strategy in lowering fatigue. Although rest breaks were not associated with less fatigue among staff caring for patients with COVID-19, other co-workers experienced some fatigue recovery. For frontline nursing staff, routine rest breaks are encouraged, and a systematic evaluation pertaining the sufficiency of rest breaks during high work demands in future research is needed.

This study aimed to explore the views and experiences of research healthcare professionals towards their redeployment to frontline clinical roles during the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ Research healthcare professionals are experienced practitioners with transferrable skills and strong sense of duty and resilience. Induction programmes to promote recalibration to clinical settings would improve their adaptability, foster confidence and emotional well-being. Careful consideration is required prior to mass redeployment to ensure research continuity in both COVID-19 and other health conditions.

To describe ways in which a hospital context, physically and culturally, influences nurses' abilities to promote and engage with environmentally responsible practice. ⋯ Nurses have a professional responsibility to address climate change, yet this study identified that nurses found it challenging to practice in environmentally responsible ways within the hospital context. Challenges they faced are related to their workload, their misaligned nursing priorities and, more importantly, because they felt unsupported by their hospital. Findings are important to both the nursing profession as well as other hospital leaders so that a culture of environmentally responsible healthcare can be developed within hospitals.

To assess whether the application of a non-invasive tool, such as ratio of oxygen saturation (ROX) index, during triage can identify patients with COVID-19 at high risk of developing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ⋯ During the difficult triage evaluation of COVID-19 patients, the ROX index can help the nurse to identify the real severity of the patient. The triage systems could integrate the ROX in the rapid patient assessment to stratify patients more accurately.
