Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialEffect of timolol, latanoprost, and dorzolamide on circadian IOP in glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
To compare the around-the-clock intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction induced by timolol 0.5%, latanoprost 0.005%, and dorzolamide in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or ocular hypertension (OHT). ⋯ Latanoprost seemed to lead to a fairly uniform circadian reduction in IOP, whereas timolol seemed to be less effective during the nighttime hours. Dorzolamide was less effective than latanoprost but led to a significant reduction in nocturnal IOP. The reason for the difference in the pattern of the IOP curve of healthy subjects is currently unknown and deserves further investigation.

Gene transfer of a soluble receptor of VEGF inhibits the growth of experimental eyelid malignant melanoma.
To determine the effect of adenovirus-mediated gene transfer of a soluble receptor of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on the growth of experimental eyelid malignant melanoma. ⋯ Adenovirus-mediated gene transfer of a soluble form of VEGF receptor (flt-1) gene inhibited the growth of the experimental eyelid malignant melanoma. This method may be useful as an antiangiogenic therapy for eyelid malignant melanoma.

Effects of oleoresin capsicum pepper spray on human corneal morphology and sensitivity.
To examine the potential harmful effects on corneal structure, innervation, and sensitivity of a spray containing the neurotoxin capsaicin (oleoresin capsicum, OC). ⋯ Although OC causes immediate changes in mechanical and chemical sensitivity that may persist for a week, a single exposure to OC appears harmless to corneal tissues. The changes are possibly associated with damage of corneal nerve terminals of mainly unmyelinated polymodal nociceptor fibers.

Characterization of rhodopsin mis-sorting and constitutive activation in a transgenic rat model of retinitis pigmentosa.
To determine the extent to which rhodopsin mis-sorting and constitutive activation of the phototransduction cascade contribute to retinal degeneration in a transgenic rat model of retinitis pigmentosa. ⋯ Because dark rearing Ser334ter rats results in little rescue, it is concluded that constitutive activation of the phototransduction cascade does not contribute significantly to photoreceptor cell death in this rat model. The nature of the rhodopsin sorting defect and the correlation between the severity of mis-sorting and rate of cell death indicate that truncated rhodopsin may cause apoptosis by interfering with normal cellular machinery in the post-Golgi transport pathway or in the plasma membrane.

Integrin-mediated neutrophil adhesion and retinal leukostasis in diabetes.
A critical early event in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy is leukocyte adhesion to the diabetic retinal vasculature. The process is mediated, in part, by intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and results in blood-retinal barrier breakdown and capillary nonperfusion. This study evaluated the expression and function of the corresponding ICAM-1-binding leukocyte beta2-integrins in experimental diabetes. ⋯ Neutrophils from diabetic animals exhibit higher levels of surface integrin expression and integrin-mediated adhesion. In vivo, CD18 blockade significantly decreases leukostasis in the diabetic retinal microvasculature. Integrin adhesion molecules may serve as therapeutic targets for the treatment and/or prevention of early diabetic retinopathy.
