Coupling evidence-based practice with technology enables nursing leaders and their staffs to engage with new vigor and passion as they integrate better practices from the nursing literature into what happens at the patient bedside. The degree to which nurses and their leaders engage positively, or negatively, affects organization's health-from the unit to the boardroom. Nurse executives now have available to them the tools needed to measure, improve, and sustain a culture of engagement in their organizations.

This article reports the results of a cross-sectional correlational survey design of nurse executives' (NEs') views on role conflict, role ambiguity, job satisfaction, and depression. A total of 380 surveys were returned from 1000 randomly selected participants. Four instruments were utilized, 1 for demographic data and 3 established instruments. ⋯ This study indicates that stress levels are not overwhelming to the NE and may be encouraging development of required skills. Healthcare organizations will continue to evolve and increase in complexity putting pressure on NEs in their many roles. Although this study did not consider strategies for coping with stress, this important avenue needs to be considered as NEs move forward with more extensive roles in the leadership of our healthcare system.

This article describes leadership in innovation opportunities for executive nurse leaders seeking a change from the traditional hospital setting. Concepts of disruptive innovation underlie the challenges in today's healthcare field. Recommendations for nurse leaders include developing a versatile portfolio of experience, establishing collegial partnerships, creating cultures of innovation, and being passionate about innovation to inspire others to a more creative approach to work. Many opportunities are available in healthcare for leaders committed to innovation.

Creating a context for excellence and innovation: comparing chief nurse executive leadership practices in magnet and non-magnet hospitals.
Chief nurse executives create a context for leadership, innovation, and practice in hospitals. It is valuable to get a sense of nurse executives' perceptions regarding their leadership practices and how they value them. ⋯ This article discusses a study of the leadership practices of these 2 groups of nurse executive's leadership practices and reports the results. Concluding is a brief discussion regarding impact and importance of the nurse executive related to excellence and innovation.
