To report the injury patterns associated with perforating (through-and-through) injuries of the globe and the visual impact of these injuries on patients with combat ocular trauma (COT) seen at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) from March 2003 through October 2006. ⋯ Perforating globe injuries associated with COT generally result in poor visual and anatomic outcomes despite surgical intervention. Prophylactic measures, such as eye protection, are helpful in reducing the likelihood of perforating injuries; however, novel surgical and pharmacologic therapies will be required to improve the functional and anatomic outcomes of these devastating injuries.

Prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness in a rural chinese adult population: the Handan Eye Study.
To describe the prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness in a rural population in Northern China. ⋯ A higher prevalence of blindness and low vision was seen in this rural Chinese sample than has been reported from urban Chinese populations. The estimated numbers with BCVA-defined low vision and blindness in 2020, based on best-corrected vision in rural Chinese adults aged 30 years or more, is expected to be 12.4 million and 2.9 million, respectively. Predominant causes of low vision and blindness in China are treatable.

To validate the VF-11, a vision-specific function scale and determine the relationship among vision impairment, ocular conditions, and vision-specific functioning in an Asian Malay population. ⋯ Presenting unilateral and bilateral vision impairment is significantly associated with poor vision-specific functioning across the spectrum of mild to severe vision impairment in this Asian Malay population.

To describe the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy in Asian Malays. ⋯ One in 10 Malay adults with diabetes in Singapore has vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy. Risk factors for retinopathy in this population are largely similar to white populations elsewhere, suggesting that control of these risk factors may reduce both the prevalence and impact of retinopathy.
