Relationship of body composition with bone mineral density in northern Chinese men by body mass index levels.
Osteoporosis and obesity are severe public health problems in an aging society, and as we all know, bone mineral density (BMD) is closely related to fat mass (FM) and fat distribution. However, studies have long focused on pre- or post-menopausal women, and its presence in men has been underestimated. To investigate the differential impact of fat on BMD, we characterized body composition of northern Chinese men and examined the relationship with BMD according to body mass index (BMI) levels. ⋯ The relationship between LM and BMD was certain in northern Chinese men while fat-bone relationship was complicated. %BF had a significantly negative association with total body and regional BMD in overweight and obese men.
