Predictive testing for BRCA1 or BRCA2 allows at-risk individuals to engage with appropriate screening and treatment services if a pathogenic mutation is identified. Previous studies have shown uptake of predictive testing to most commonly range between 20% and 40% (Table 2). This represents a missed cancer prevention opportunity. Possible explanations for this low uptake include lack of disclosure of at-risk status to relatives, lack of awareness of cancer genetics services, or patient preference. The goal of the current study was to investigate the uptake of BRCA1 or BRCA2 predictive testing in an Irish population. ⋯ Uptake of BRCA1 OR BRCA2 mutation testing in Ireland is suboptimal, particularly amongst Irish males and distant relatives. Further research is needed to identify strategies which may improve uptake within current legal and ethical frameworks.

Acute gastrointestinal bleeding (GI bleeding) can range from mild symptoms to life-threatening conditions that require emergency intervention. Therefore, it is important to first identify the high-risk and low-risk patients in the emergency department (ED). ⋯ This study validated that lactate clearance at three-hourly intervals is useful for early prediction of mortality and prognosis in patients with GI bleeding. It is important to perform not only an initial lactate measurement, but also a follow-up lactate measurement after initial resuscitation to check the lactate clearance.

Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder in lung cancer, and it particularly occurs in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients. The prognostic significance of hyponatremia has been reported in several studies with controversial results. ⋯ Serum sodium concentration did not have an impact on survival in SCLC patients; thus, we concluded that neither the presence nor the severity of hyponatremia affected the outcome of these patients.

In humans, zinc is involved in many biological functions acting as signaling ion, neurotransmitter, structural component of proteins, and cofactor for many enzymes and, through this, is an important regulator of the immune and nervous system. Food supplies zinc to the human body, but a high prevalence of inadequate dietary zinc intake has been reported worldwide. ⋯ We conclude that at present, low zinc intake may be prevalent in as much as 87% of women, including 47% of pregnant women. Therefore, zinc status needs to be considered as a factor impacting the health of women, and in particular pregnant women, also in industrialized and developed countries such as Ireland.

Due to its increasing prevalence, breast cancer has become a serious public health problem. In addition to the models used to identify individuals at risk, the search for fast and accurate tools has continued for years. ⋯ PD measurement can be considered as a promising method for the determination of individuals at risk for breast cancer in a large group of patients, but we think that serum MIS levels are not suitable for risk assessment in perimenopausal patients.
