The response of cardiac and pulmonary disease to exercise testing.
The features of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease in exercise testing are described. In general, ventilatory limitation is the most common factor in lung disease. An early anaerobic threshold and a decreased VO2 mix in the absence of ventilatory limitation is the usual feature of severe heart disease.

The hypoxemia of ARDS may result from numerous and varied stresses to the system responsible for gas exchange in the lung. These may be both pulmonary and non-pulmonary in origin. A thorough understanding of all the factors involved is necessary to correctly interpret and treat these complex and critically ill patients.
