Acute renal failure during sepsis: potential role of cell cycle regulation.
This study aimed to evaluate cell cycle regulation in acute kidney injury after intraperitoneal sepsis in rats. ⋯ The data suggest that G1 cell cycle arrest may play a role in the initiation of kidney injury, whereas, through regulating cell cycle, p53, p21, CDKs, cyclins and P-pRb may be involved in the injury or recovery of renal function after intraperitoneal sepsis.

Vaccination coverage rates in eleven European countries during two consecutive influenza seasons.
This study assessed influenza vaccination coverage rates in eleven European countries during seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08. The aims were to analyse vaccine uptake rates in the general population and in high-risk groups, including children, as well as to understand the principal drivers and barriers towards vaccination. ⋯ During 2007/08, influenza vaccination coverage rates differed widely between countries, not only in the general population but also in the predefined at-risk groups. Generally, the increases in coverage compared to the previous season were marginal. Overcoming the barriers and implementing the driving forces identified by our surveys may help to increase vaccine uptake and to reach the corresponding WHO goals.

Tigecycline in the treatment of infections from multi-drug resistant gram-negative pathogens.
This observational retrospective study aims to present early experience with tigecycline (TIG) in the treatment of infections due to multi-drug resistant (MDR) microorganisms. ⋯ TIG represents a promising option in infections from MDR pathogens, however, further clinical experience is required.

Epidemiology of hospital-treated Salmonella infection; data from a national cohort over a ten-year period.
The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and economic burden of hospital admissions related to Salmonella infections amongst the population of Spain over the course of 10 years (1997-2006). ⋯ Salmonella infection remains an important cause of hospitalization of children up to 4 years old, but the main mortality and case-fatality rates are observed in persons older than 65 years.
