Intraosseous (IO)-access plays an alternative route during resuscitation. Our study in preterm and term stillborns was performed to find alternative IO puncture sites beside the recommended proximal tibia. ⋯ Proximal humeral head and distal femoral end might be alternative IO areas which may lead to further IO puncture sites in neonates.

There are 20,000 sudden cardiac arrests (SCAs) in Australia annually, with 90% case-fatality. ⋯ The health and economic burden of SCAs is high, predominantly underpinned by very high mortality. Annual national losses approach AUD$2 billion (USD$1.42 billion) and are comparable to productivity losses from all cancers combined. Prioritising research and state-of-the-art care for SCA patients appears economically sound.

To evaluate the mean aortic-right atrial pressure (AoP-RAP) gradients and mean coronary perfusion pressures (CPPs) observed during open cardiac massage (OCM) versus those obtained with selective aortic arch perfusion (SAAP) in post-mortem hypovolemic swine. ⋯ SAAP appears to create a more favorable and efficient hemodynamic profile for obtaining ROSC when compared to OCM in this preclinical porcine study.

Mechanical chest compression devices allow for variation in chest compression (CCs) characteristics from moment to moment, enabling therapy that is not feasible for manual CCs. Effects of varying compressions over time have not been studied. In a randomized trial in an experimental model of prolonged cardiac arrest, we compared time-varying CPR (TVCPR), alternating between 100 and 200 compressions per minute (cpm) every 6 s, to guidelines CPR (Control). ⋯ University of Alabama at Birmingham Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Protocol Number 140406860.
