Comparative StudyCorrelation of clinical presentation with intraoperative level diagnosis in lower lumbar disc herniation.
Little evidence exists on the diagnostic values of concomitant symptoms and signs in the level diagnosis of patients with lower lumbar disc herniation. We assessed the diagnostic value of the clinical presentation of fifth lumbar and first sacral root dysfunction due to disc herniation. ⋯ The diagnostic value of clinical features of herniated fifth lumbar disc herniation is more reliable than fourth lumbar disc herniation. The value of clinical presentation in the level diagnosis of lower lumbar disc herniation is highly specific, but rather insensitive.

Emerging nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin resistance in non-typhoidal Salmonella isolated from patients having acute diarrhoeal disease.
Non-typhoidal Salmonella are one of the key etiological agents of diarrhoeal disease. The appearance of multiple drug resistance along with resistance to quinolones in this bacterium poses a serious therapeutic problem. We determined the prevalence of nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin resistance in non-typhoidal Salmonella isolated from faecal samples of patients with acute diarrhoeal disease attending the outpatient and inpatient departments of a hospital in Saudi Arabia during the years 1999 to 2002. ⋯ The increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance encountered among non-typhoidal Salmonella necessitate the judicious use of these drugs in humans. Moreover, these findings support the concern that the use of quinolones in animal feed may lead to an increase in resistance and should be restricted.

Effect of obstructive airway disease in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.
Extensive research has been devoted to cystic fibrosis-related brochiectasis, compared with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis but the latter is more common and results in significant morbidity and mortality. We assessed the relationship between pulmonary function test (PFT) findings and sputum bacteriology, blood gases, number of hospital admissions and mortality in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bonchiectasis (NCFB). ⋯ Patients with NCFB who have OAD have a significantly higher rate of colonization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PSA), hypercapnic respiratory failure, a greater number of hospital admissions due to exacerbation of bronchiectasis, and a higher mortality compared with patients with restrictive or normal pulmonary functions.

The effect of carbohydrate intolerance on neonatal birth weight in pregnant women without gestational diabetes mellitus.
There is still no consensus on screening, threshold levels and treatment of gestational diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, the importance of a positive 50-g glucose screening test in patients who had a negative 100-g oral glucose tolerance test remains controversial. We investigated the impact of the 50-g glucose screening test results on neonatal outcome in pregnant women with uncomplicated pregnancies, who had no risk factors according to ACOG criteria. ⋯ Because of similarities with gestational diabetes mellitus on the basis of perinatal outcomes, the non-diabetic pregnant women with 50-g glucose screen test result over 140 mg/dl but a negative 100-g OGTT should be followed closely.
