In addition to the acute adverse consequencesof ectopic pregnancy, the subsequent reproductive potential of the affected women has continued to attract the attention of medical scientists in recent times. In a study to evaluate the fertility potentials in 138 patients treated for ectopic pregnancy in the King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH) Riyadh, 105 (76.1%) of the patients had follow-up management for periods varying from 12 to 60 months. ⋯ Of these, 51 (48.6%) eventually became pregnant and produced 63 viable pregnancies, 18 abortions and one repeat ectopic pregnancy. Many of those who failed to become pregnant over the follow-up period probably had tubal damage due to the antecedent pelvic inflammatory disease (PID),perhaps compounded by the effects of the ectopic pregnancy and the management, among other factors.

A high caloric intake from fat sources and prevailing obesity in the Saudi population prompted this study. Waist to hip circumference ratio (WHR), fasting cholesterol, triglycerides and insulin were measured in 76 non-insulin dependent adult Saudi diabetics. Serum LDL, HDL and VLDL were measured in 45 of these diabetics. ⋯ This preliminary study reveals the presence of significant central adiposity and an atherogenic lipid profile in Saudi diabetics. The sex differences in lipids indicates the need for studies involving lipoprotein metabolism in Saudis. Further, an increase in atherosclerosis-related disorders should be expected in Saudi diabetics.

Helicobacter pylori infection in gastric cancer: A study of 84 cases from Asir Region.
Gastric cancer can be divided into three histologic types: intestinal and diffuse adenocarcinoma, and malignant lymphoma. To determine whether Helicobacter pylori was associated with either cancer type, we reviewed histologic sections from stomachs of 84 patients with the diagnosis of gastric. Of 63 patients with histologic evidence of intestinal adenocarcinoma, 53 (84%) contained H. pylori n noncancerous tissue compared with six (66.7%) of nine patients with diffuse adenocarcinoma (odds ratio = 2.65; Z=1.048; P>0.05) and with eight (66.7%) of 12 patients with non-Hodgkin malignant lymphoma of the stomach (odds ratio = 2.65; Z=0.826; P>0.05). Our findings are compared with reported data from other countries and we are not aware of similar reports from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Retrospective analysis of assisted conception techniques: A three year experience.
In this retrospective survey, we present the results of infertility treatment by various assisted conception techniques at the assisted conception unit, New Jeddah Clinic Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. During a three year period from January 1990 to December 1992, a total of 249 treatment cycles were started in patients with long-standing infertility. There were 107 ovulation induction cycles carried out in patients with chronic anovulation and patent tubes and normal spermogram using rigorous ovulation induction therapy with intensive ultrasound monitoring. ⋯ A total of 54 pregnancies resulted from these treatments, giving an overall pregnancy rate of 21.6%. The highest pregnancy rate of 32.35% is seen in the CSO and intrauterine insemination (IUI) in the GIFT. The pregnancy rate in the IVF/ET group was 22.2%/oocyte pickup and 30.8%/embryo transfer.
