Radiation therapy for chordoma and chondrosarcoma of the skull base and the cervical spine. Prognostic factors and patterns of failure.
Prospective analysis of local tumor control, survival and treatment complications in 67 consecutive patients treated with fractionated photon and proton radiation for chordoma or chondrosarcoma of the base of the skull and the cervical spine. ⋯ In chordomas and chondrosarcomas of the skull base and cervical spine, combined photon and proton radiation therapy offers excellent chances of cure. In two thirds of the cases, relapses are located in the GTV. Maximum diameter, GTV, and age are prognostic indicators of local control. These results should be confirmed during a longer follow-up.

To evaluate the cytoprotective effect of amifostine against radiation-induced acute toxicity to the rectal mucosa. ⋯ Amifostine seems to have a significant cytoprotective efficacy in acute radiation-induced rectal mucositis in terms of symptomatic and objective endpoints.

Locoregional failure 15 years after mastectomy in women with one to three positive axillary nodes with or without irradiation the significance of tumor size.
There is insufficient evidence to suggest the routine use of postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) in patients with one to three positive axillary nodes and T1/2 tumors. We have assessed the risk of locoregional recurrence (LRR) with or without RT in this group of patients, and focused on the results in subgroups defined by tumor size. ⋯ Patients with T1 tumor and one to three positive nodes are at low risk of isolated LRR either with or without RT. Patients with T2 tumor and one to three positive nodes are at high risk of isolated LRR without RT. Our findings support the routine use of PMRT in patients with T2 tumor, especially those aged < or = 45 years.

To investigate the correlation between late rectal complications and rectal dose in cervix cancer patients treated with high-dose-rate intracavitary radiotherapy (HDR ICR) and to analyze factors reducing rectal complications. ⋯ In vivo dosimetry using TLD during HDR ICR was a good predictor of late rectal complications. Hence, if data from in vivo dosimetry shows any possibility of rectal bleeding, efforts should be made to reduce the rectal dose.

Chemoradiation of unresectable pancreatic carcinoma: impact of pretreatment hemoglobin level on patterns of failure.
To evaluate, in patients with locally advanced pancreatic carcinoma undergoing concomitant chemoradiation, the impact of pretreatment hemoglobin (Hb) concentration on the outcome in terms of clinical response, local control, metastasis-free survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival. ⋯ In a group of patients with locally advanced pancreatic carcinoma treated with chemoradiation, a significant correlation was observed between pretreatment Hb levels and metastasis-free survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival.
