Patient-Friendly Discharge Summaries in Korea Based on ChatGPT: Software Development and Validation.
Although discharge summaries in patient-friendly language can enhance patient comprehension and satisfaction, they can also increase medical staff workload. Using a large language model, we developed and validated software that generates a patient-friendly discharge summary. ⋯ Large-language models utilizing Few-shot prompts generally produce acceptable discharge summaries without significant misinformation. Our research highlights the potential of such models in creating patient-friendly discharge summaries for Korean patients to support patient-centered care.

Current Status and Associated Factors of Post-Hemorrhagic Hydrocephalus in Infants of 22 to 28 Weeks Gestation With Severe Intraventricular Hemorrhage in Korea: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH), a common complication of severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in very low birth weight (BW) infants, is associated with significant morbidity and poor neurological outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess the current status of PHH and analyze the risk factors associated with the necessity of treatment for PHH in infants born between 22 and 28 weeks of gestation, specifically those with severe IVH (grade 3 or 4). ⋯ It is necessary to maintain meticulous monitoring and neurological intervention for infants with PHH not only during admission but also after discharge. In addition, identifying the clinical factors that increase the likelihood of developing PHH from severe IVH is crucial.

Characterization of Ceftriaxone-Resistant Haemophilus influenzae Among Korean Children.
Haemophilus influenzae is a frequently encountered pathogen responsible for respiratory tract infections in children. Following the detection of ceftriaxone-resistant H. influenzae at our institution, we aimed to investigate the resistance mechanisms of ceftriaxone in H. influenzae, with a particular focus on alterations in penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3) and β-lactamase production. ⋯ The emergence of ceftriaxone-resistant H. influenzae with ceftriaxone MIC values of up to 0.75 mg/L was observed even in children in South Korea, with most associated with S385T and L389F substitutions. The N526K mutation alone does not significantly impact ceftriaxone resistance. Further large-scale studies are essential to investigate changes in antibiotic resistance patterns and factors influencing antibiotic resistance in H. influenzae isolated from pediatric patients in Korea.

ReviewComprehensive Guidance for the Prevention of Periprosthetic Joint Infection After Total Joint Arthroplasty and Pitfalls in the Prevention.
Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is a surgical procedure, in which parts of damaged joints are removed and replaced with a prosthesis. The main indication of TJA is osteoarthritis, and the volume of TJA is rising annually along with the increase of aged population. Hip and knee are the most common joints, in which TJAs are performed. ⋯ However, not all contamination leads to PJI. It develops when the burden of contamination exceeds the immune threshold or the colony forming units (CFUs) and various factors contribute to a decrease in the CFU level. Surgeons should be aware of the germ burden/CFU concept and should monitor sources of contamination to maintain the germ burden below the CFU to prevent PJI.

Interim Estimates of 2023-2024 Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Among Adults in Korea.
In the 2023-2024 season, the influenza epidemic in South Korea peaked earlier than in recent years. In this study, we aimed to estimate the interim vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the influenza vaccination to prevent influenza during the early season. From November 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, we enrolled 2,632 subjects with influenza-like illness from eight hospitals participating in hospital-based influenza morbidity and mortality surveillance. ⋯ The results showed an adjusted VE of 22.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 6.6 to 35.8) for the total population. The adjusted VE was 22.3% (95% CI, 6.1 to 35.7) for influenza A and 9.4% (95% CI, -51.3 to 45.7) for influenza A/H1N1. Full results of the analysis will be reported.
