Individual dietary intervention in adult patients with mitochondrial disease due to the m.3243 A>G mutation.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an individually tailored dietary intervention on personalized goals, body composition (BC), functioning, and quality of life (QoL) in adult patients with mitochondrial disease (MD) due to the m.3243 A>G mutation. ⋯ An individually tailored dietary intervention is promising to achieve personalized goals of patients with MD, especially with regard to BC, HGS, and gastrointestinal complaints. The intervention also improves QoL, and decreases fatigue.

Ensuring adequate nutritional support in patients with walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WON) is challenging and weight loss is often considerable. The aim of this study was to evaluate resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition in patients with WON. ⋯ In patients with WON, an increased REE appears to predict increased muscle and fat loss. Additional studies are necessary to evaluate if REE may be used to improve nutritional support.

The aim of this pre-birth cohort study was to examine the associations between maternal intake of vegetables, fruit, and antioxidants during pregnancy and behavioral problems in Japanese children 5 y of age. ⋯ Maternal intake of vegetables, fruit, and vitamin C during pregnancy may be preventive against any of the behavioral problems assessed here except for peer problems in Japanese children 5 y of age.

Inappropriate infant and young child feeding and caring practices affect nutritional status, increases the risk for growth faltering, and ultimately, affect child survival. The aim of this study was to characterize the feeding and caring practices of disadvantaged urban Indian children 12 to 24 mo of age in relation to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recommendations. ⋯ Complementary feeding and caregiving practices were suboptimal among these disadvantaged young Indian children and education interventions focused on infant and young child feeding, responsive feeding, food safety, and hygiene practices are urgently needed.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNc). The proinflammatory response can occur early in the disease, contributing to nigrostriatal degeneration. Identification of the new molecules, which are able to slow down the degenerative process associated with PD, represents one of the main interests. Recently, natural polyphenols, especially lignans, have raised attention for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and estrogenic activity at a peripheral level. The aim of this study was to evaluate the central effects of chronic treatment with lignan 7-hydroxymatairesinol (HMR/lignan) on neurodegenerative, neuroinflammatory processes and motor deficits induced by a unilateral intrastriatal injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in rats to evaluate the potential neuroprotective properties of this compound. ⋯ These results suggest intriguing properties of HMR/lignan at neuroprotective and symptomatic levels in the context of PD.
