Dietary patterns are a useful tool to study the impact of overall maternal diet on human milk (HM) composition beyond single foods or nutrients. The present study aimed to identify dietary patterns among Chinese lactating women and assess their associations with HM macronutrient composition. ⋯ Maternal dietary patterns with high proportions of animal and plant-based foods were associated with higher fat and lower protein concentrations in colostrum. Different associations were found in mature milk. Dietary-pattern analysis provides an opportunity to characterize total diet and may be more predictive of HM composition than single foods or nutrients.

This study aimed to investigate the performance of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria for malnutrition assessment in people with esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy. ⋯ The GLIM criteria showed good performance in diagnosing and classifying malnutrition in people with esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy. The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, Nutritional Risk Screening 2002, and prognostic nutritional index could be appropriately used to implement the two-step approach to the GLIM criteria.

Effects of ketoanalogues on skeletal muscle mass in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease: real-world evidence.
Ketoanalogue (KA) supplementation in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on a restricted protein diet has been shown to maintain their nutritional status in clinical trials. However, a gap existed between the findings of the clinical trials and the real-world practice. The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the KA effect on skeletal muscle mass in patients with stage 4-5 CKD. ⋯ In real-world practice, we concluded that KA supplementation favorably prevents skeletal muscle mass loss and fat mass gain in elderly patients with stage 4-5 CKD.

Malnutrition screening instruments used in hospitals mainly include criteria to identify characteristics of malnutrition. However, to tackle malnutrition in an early stage, identifying risk factors for malnutrition in addition to characteristics may be valuable. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive validity of the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA SF), which addresses malnutrition characteristics and risk factors, and the Short Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (SNAQ), which addresses mainly malnutrition characteristics, for length of stay (LOS) in a mixed hospital population. ⋯ The PG-SGA SF, as a proactive malnutrition screening instrument, predicts LOS in various hospital wards, whereas the SNAQ, as a reactive instrument, does not. Therefore, we recommend the PG-SGA SF for proactive screening for malnutrition risk.

The aim of this study was to determine whether handgrip strength (HGS) has diagnostic accuracy for malnutrition assessment and whether it is an independent predictor of 90-d mortality in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). ⋯ The results suggested that HGS is an independent indicator of malnutrition in patients with ADHF and can serve as a prognostic marker of 3-mo mortality in men.
