The aim of this study was to assess the association of genetically determined iron status with the risk for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. ⋯ MR analysis provided evidence that genetically predicted higher serum transferrin, indicating lower iron status, may be protective against NAFLD, whereas higher transferrin saturation, indicating higher iron status, might increase the risk for NAFLD and its pathogenesis.

Some studies have demonstrated that caffeine consumption is a risk factor for insufficient sleep or poor sleep quality in adolescents. The aim of this study was to estimate the average daily caffeine consumption and to investigate the association between caffeine, sleep duration, and screen time in a large sample of Brazilian adolescents. ⋯ This study demonstrated that caffeine consumption does not interfere with sleep duration or screen time. Moreover, the study provided important information about the source of caffeine most consumed by Brazilian adolescents, which could help professionals plan appropriate caffeine consumption.

During the coronavirus 2019 pandemic, there had been more than 758 million COVID-19 cases as of February 13, 2023, and it is the main cause of death in many countries. Due to the variation in disease presentation, scientists determined that people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus were at higher risk of mortality. However, people living with type 1 diabetes have not been thoroughly studied, especially in extreme regions of developing countries. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic restrictions on different variables in a cohort with type 1 diabetes. ⋯ This study found that adherence to diabetes care was reduced during the pandemic owing to a variety of behavioral reasons and environmental changes (e.g., quarantines and food security). This affected this population's HbA1c levels, BMI, linear growth, and number of hospitalizations as main consequences. Telemedicine remains an important tool, but it must be reconsidered among all different age groups.

Cases of association between celiac disease and wheat allergy have been described in the literature. However, to date, no reported cases have linked celiac disease with wheat food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES). We report a case of this association. ⋯ It has been hypothesized that exclusion diets in food-allergic children may lead to an increase in specific immunoglobulin E levels for those foods and, consequently, the risk of anaphylaxis. However, FPIES is not an immunoglobulin E-mediated condition. Hence, further investigations are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking these 2 disorders.

Studies suggest that diets with a low glycemic index and high protein are favorable in aiding weight loss and improving weight maintenance; however, methods to measure dietary intake are comprehensive both for the participant and the study staff. We aimed to validate the accuracy of the dietary glycemic index and protein intake assessed through a food frequency questionnaire against a 4-d weighed food record in Danish pregnant women with obesity. ⋯ The results suggest no risk of bias between the two methods of assessment; hence, a 29-item food frequency questionnaire can be used to assess the mean glycemic index, glycemic load, and protein intake in pregnant women with obesity.
