Sarcopenia is a well-known risk factor for inferior cancer outcomes, but the identification of patients at risk remains challenging. A new sarcopenia index (SI), defined as serum creatinine (Cr) × cystatin C (CysC)-based glomerular filtration rate (eGFRCysC), has been reported to be an objective surrogate marker for sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to assess whether the SI is associated with sarcopenia and cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in patients with advanced cancer. ⋯ The SI might be a useful objective tool for assessing sarcopenia in patients with advanced cancer. Further studies are warranted to extend the present findings.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) carries a high risk for malnutrition owing to the state of debilitation that results from acute respiratory failure symptoms. The aim of this study was to provide an approach to reduce the risk for malnutrition and improve patients' clinical outcomes. ⋯ This protocol should not be considered as a guideline; rather, it is intended to report the clinical experience of a nutrition team in an Italian reference center for the treatment of patients with COVID-19. Nutritional strategies should be implemented to prevent worsening of clinical outcomes.

We present a case of an otherwise healthy 3-year-old child who presented with limping, bone pain, fatigue, and agitation. Differential diagnosis included an infection of the bone, malignancy, an inflammatory bone disease, and metabolic bone disease. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lower limbs and the spine was consistent with scurvy, and the diagnosis was confirmed by very low levels of vitamin C. ⋯ Previous reports of scurvy were in patients with other medical conditions, such as malabsorption, or behavioral conditions as in autism. This case demonstrates that scurvy, an almost forgotten condition from past centuries, can occur in otherwise healthy children and should raise awareness regarding the importance of a balanced diet and proper nutritional history taking. Following growth charts as the only screening tool for balanced and inclusive nutrition may not be sufficient.

The aim of this study was to evaluate polyphenol intake in women with different classes of obesity and identify which are consumed more frequently and what the food sources are. ⋯ Although the diets of the study participants did include some food sources of polyphenols, they were not of sufficient quality to significantly contribute to a healthy diet; instead, they sometimes were foods may have that contributed to weight gain. Women with class III obesity consumed the most calories; however, they had low fruit, vegetable, and whole foods intake.

Amino acids are not only the building blocks of proteins, but also can be metabolized to energy substances or function as signaling molecules. The aim of this study was to profile whether amino acid treatment (essential amino acids and alanine) affects the energy metabolism (glycolysis, mitochondrial respiration) of cultured hepatocytes. ⋯ The findings from the present study complement basic knowledge of the effects of amino acid treatment on energy metabolism in cultured hepatocytes and indicate that phenylalanine and phenylpyruvate inhibit glycolysis.
