The presence of obesity may confound cholecalciferol dosing in vitamin D-deficient patients owing to potentially decreased bioavailability. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate cholecalciferol therapy in vitamin D-deficient, critically ill trauma patients with and without obesity. ⋯ Obesity alters the response to cholecalciferol therapy in critically ill patients with severe traumatic injuries.

Patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS) receiving long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) are at risk for intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD). The aim of the present study was to evaluate dynamic changes of liver fibrosis and steatosis within 12 mo by transient elastography (TE), including controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) in a cohort of patients with SBS receiving long-term PN. ⋯ In the present study cohort, prevalence of advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis was low (<10%) without significant dynamic within the 12-mo follow-up. Short intestinal remnant length <100cm appeared to be a risk factor for development of fibrosis.

The aim of this study was to examine the association between inflammatory potential diet as determined by dietary inflammatory index (DII) scores and coronary artery disease (CAD) in a population-based, case-control study of middle-aged Jordanian adults. ⋯ The present findings, obtained in this ordanian population, add to the growing literature indicating that a proinflammatory diet is associated with higher risk for developing CAD.

Tomato and its derived products have a very interesting nutritional value in addition to prominent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Tomatoes are generally quite safe to eat. ⋯ On the other hand, the synthesis and accumulation of these bioactive molecules depends on many other factors, such as environmental conditions. In this sense, this review briefly highlights the relationship between the chemistry of tomato and its derived products and their beneficial or harmful effects on human health, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease or heartburn, allergies, kidney and cardiovascular disorders, prostate cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, lycopenodermia, body aches, arthritis, and urinary problems.

The composition of milk from mothers delivering prematurely differs from that of full-term mature milk and changes over time. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that changes in milk metabolomic profile from mothers delivering prematurely persist over time when compared with mothers delivering at term. ⋯ The preterm milk metabolome pattern undergoes maturation during the first 3 wk after birth, but at the end of the third week it still does not resemble the term milk pattern. The specific changes in mothers' milk metabolomic profiles according to their offspring might reflect the different nutritional requirement of each preterm infant. This knowledge is crucial to move from standardized nutritional protocols to tailored, individualized nutrition in preterm infants.
