The aim of this study was to evaluate the dose-response relationship between ergocalciferol therapy and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations in enterally fed, critically ill patients with traumatic injuries. ⋯ Ergocalciferol therapy improved baseline serum 25-OH vitamin D concentrations but was inadequate for consistently achieving normal serum concentrations of 25-OH vitamin D during critical illness. The trend in increasing appearance of mild hypercalcemia for the highest dosage group is concerning.

Vitamin K is a potent regulator of vascular dynamics and prevents vascular calcification. Vitamin K is increasingly being recognized for its antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Recently we demonstrated that vitamin K1 (5 mg/kg) protects against streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes and diabetic cataract. The aim of this study was to determine whether the hypoglycemic action of vitamin K1 could inhibit early-onset diabetic nephropathy in a streptozotocin-induced rat kidney. ⋯ Vitamin K1 could be an important nutrient based interventional strategy for early onset diabetic nephropathy.

Iron participates in several mechanisms involving inflammation and innate immunity, yet the dysregulation of its homeostasis is a major cause of metabolic syndrome. Adipocytes should play a major role in iron metabolism, as an impairment in iron turnover is closely related to insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of iron in an in vitro-inflamed adipocyte model. ⋯ FeSO4 heptahydrate at a relatively physiological dose, induced gene expression of iron modulatory proteins and also enhanced RNA transcripts of several inflammatory cytokines and chemokines through a priming/synergistic mechanism involving membrane TLR4.

Dietary compounds, including micronutrients such as vitamin A and its metabolite retinoic acid, directly influence the development and function of the immune system. In this study, we show that either dietary deficiency of or supplementation with vitamin A had immunologic effects in mice that were fed these diets during their development (for 8 wk during the postweaning period). ⋯ Serum immunoglobulin G levels also were elevated in these mice. Conversely, supplemented mice showed higher frequencies of CD4+Foxp3+LAP+ regulatory T cells in gut lymphoid tissues and spleen, suggesting that vitamin A supplementation in the diet may be beneficial in pathologic situations such as inflammatory bowel diseases.

Polyphenols (PP) have demonstrated beneficial effects on low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress; however, little is known about their effect on highly inflamed muscle. The purposes of this study were (i) to evaluate muscle alteration induced by high-grade inflammation, and (ii) to test the effects of red grape PP supplementation on these alterations. ⋯ These observations suggest that nutritional dosages of red grape polyphenols might be beneficial for reducing skeletal muscle atrophy, even in a high-grade inflammation environment.
