ReviewMachine learning in the prediction and detection of new-onset atrial fibrillation in ICU: a systematic review.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) stands as the predominant arrhythmia observed in ICU patients. Nevertheless, the absence of a swift and precise method for prediction and detection poses a challenge. This study aims to provide a comprehensive literature review on the application of machine learning (ML) algorithms for predicting and detecting new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) in ICU-treated patients. ⋯ Notably, CatBoost exhibited superior performance in NOAF prediction, while the support vector machine excelled in NOAF detection. Machine learning algorithms emerge as promising tools for predicting and detecting NOAF in ICU patients. The incorporation of these algorithms in clinical practice has the potential to enhance decision-making and the overall management of NOAF in ICU settings.

ReviewMultisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: an Umbrella review.
We conducted an Umbrella review of eligible studies to evaluate what patient features have been investigated in the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) population, in order to guide future investigations. We comprehensively searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from December 1, 2019 to the May 6, 2022. The time period was limited to cover the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic period. ⋯ The mortality rate for children with MIS-C was 1.9% (interquartile range (IQR) 0.48), the ICU admission rate was 72.6% (IQR 8.3), and the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation rate was 4.7% (IQR 2.0). A meta-analysis of eligible studies found that cerebral natriuretic peptide in children with MIS-C was higher than that in children with COVID-19, and that the use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in combination with glucocorticoids to treat MIS-C compared to IVIG alone was associated with lower treatment failure. In the future, for patients with MIS-C, studies focused on safety of surgery requiring general anesthesia, risk factors, treatment, and long-term outcomes are warranted.

Comparative StudyEvaluation of pulse oximeter at the nasal septum during general anesthesia: comparison with finger oximeter.
Though the finger is generally recommended for pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring site, its reliability may be compromised in conditions of poor peripheral perfusion. Therefore, we compared the performance of nasal septum SpO2 monitoring with finger SpO2 monitoring relative to simultaneous arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) monitoring in generally anesthetized patients. ⋯ Considering the higher stability to hypothermia with a similar accuracy, nasal septum pulse oximetry may be an attractive alternative to finger pulse oximetry. Observational StudyDiaphragmatic dysfunction is associated with postoperative pulmonary complications and phrenic nerve paresis in patients undergoing thoracic surgery.
We aimed to quantify perioperative changes in diaphragmatic function and phrenic nerve conduction in patients undergoing routine thoracic surgery. ⋯ NCT04507594.
