Steatotic liver disease (SLD) prevalence is rising worldwide, linked to insulin resistance and obesity. SLD prevalence can surpass 10% even among those with normal weight. In Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), where Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) trematode infection and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are common, infection related liver morbidity such as cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is high, but data on SLD prevalence is lacking. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence and explore determinants of SLD in rural southern Lao PDR for lean and non-lean populations. ⋯ SLD prevalence is notably high among Laotian adults in rural areas, particularly in females and in non-lean individuals. Lean individuals with OV infection exhibited lower SLD prevalence. SLD was more prevalent in individuals with T2DM, independent of BMI. SLD adds to the burden of infection-related liver morbidity in Lao PDR.

Cognitive function, including moral decision-making abilities, can be impaired by sleep loss. Blue-enriched light interventions have been shown to ameliorate cognitive impairment during night work. This study investigated whether the quality of moral decision-making during simulated night work differed for night work in blue-enriched white light, compared to warm white light. ⋯ The results indicate that moral decisions during simulated night work in warm white light, but not blue-enriched white light, become less mature and principle-oriented, and more rule-based compared to daytime, hence blue-enriched white light may function as a moderator. Further studies are needed, and the findings should be tentatively considered.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT03203538) Registered: 26/06/2017; https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT03203538.

This study aimed to assess whether in utero exposure to hyperglycemia influences prescription medicine purchases in the offspring of women with type 1 diabetes (exposed offspring). ⋯ Our findings suggest that exposed offspring purchase more reimbursable prescription medicines than reference offspring from age seven to thirty years. More research is needed to examine the effects of intrauterine exposure to hyperglycemia on long-term health in offspring.

Lynch syndrome (LS) is a hereditary condition associated with an increased risk of colorectal and endometrial cancer. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of women with LS regarding combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) use compared to a control group of healthy women. ⋯ This study highlights contrasting perceptions of CHCs and their implications in oncology between women with LS and healthy women. Tailored counselling and support strategies are crucial for empowering women with LS to make informed decisions about their gynaecologic health.

The practice of hormone therapy is crucial in aligning secondary sex characteristics with the gender identity of transgender adults. This study examines the effects of a commonly used injectable hormone combination, specifically estradiol enanthate with dihydroxyprogesterone acetophenide (EEn/DHPA), on serum hormonal levels and self-reported satisfaction with breast development in transwomen. Our research focused on a retrospective longitudinal study involving a large cohort of transwomen evaluated between 2020 and 2022, comprising 101 participants. ⋯ Concerning satisfaction with breast development, 76% reported increased fulfillment with breast augmentation while using EEn/DHPA. These results suggest that an injectable, low-cost EEn/DHPA administered every three weeks could serve as an alternative feminizing regimen, particularly considering the extensive long-term experience of the local transgender community. Further longitudinal studies on the efficacy of feminizing-body effects and endovascular risks of various parenteral CEP types are warranted to improve primary healthcare provision for transgender persons.
