Inspiratory muscle training impact on respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, and quality of life in children with chest burn: A randomized controlled trial.
Respiratory muscle function is compromised in children recovering from chest wall burns, which potentially leads to more impact on exercise capacity and quality of life. This study investigates the effects of an inspiratory muscle training intervention accompanied with a pulmonary rehabilitation program on respiratory muscle strength, lung function, functional capacity, and quality of life in chest burned children. ⋯ Eight weeks of inspiratory muscle training combined with pulmonary rehabilitation program improved children with chest burns' respiratory muscles strength, lung functions, functional capacity, and quality of life. Inspiratory muscle training may be employed in burn rehabilitation programs. It is a safe and effective therapy in chest burned children.

In the days following a burn injury, major burn patients (MBP) present a multifactorial coagulation disorder known as acute burn-induced coagulopathy. Several studies have investigated coagulation in MBPs; however, Factor XIII (FXIII), which converts fibrin monomers into a stable clot and promotes wound healing, has not yet been studied. ⋯ MBPs experience a significant decrease in plasma levels of FXIII from the time of admission up to 24 h after surgery. Abnormally low levels were observed at the time of surgery that could not be detected by other coagulation tests. The decrease in most factors at 24 h seems to be associated with dilution due to intensive fluid resuscitation.

An effective patient-reported outcome measure for scars is needed to assess scar treatments and thus improve scar management. The recently developed SCAR-Q questionnaire for all scar types, which consists of the Appearance, Symptom, and Psychosocial impact scales, has been developed with patients' input. The aim of this study was to translate the SCAR-Q into Finnish and to assess its psychometric properties in burn patients. ⋯ The Finnish version of the SCAR-Q is equivalent with the original scale, showed excellent internal consistency, factor analysis confirmed it for the Appearance and Psychosocial impact scale, and demonstrated good reliability with all subscales when used in assessing burn scars.

The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamic changes and interrelationships between leukocyte components and inflammatory markers in the early stages and sepsis stage in severe burns, and explore their potential clinical significance. ⋯ The results of this study revealed the dynamic interrelationships between leucocyte components and inflammatory indicators in the early stages and sepsis stage in severe burns, reflecting the different weightings of inflammatory responses and immune dysfunction in different disease stages and its correlation with outcomes, which providing useful clinical information for dynamic immunomodulatory therapy. Moreover, dynamic monitoring of MLPN value can provide timely information for clinical evaluation.

Traditional fixation of autografts in the treatment of burns involves the use of sutures and staples. A novel fibrin sealant, Artiss, has been introduced as an alternate method of fixation and has shown promising safety and efficacy results in the adult population. Our study assessed the effectiveness of fibrin sealant to secure autologous split thickness skin grafts (ASTSG) in the pediatric burn population. ⋯ Outcomes from autograft fixation with fibrin sealant were comparable to those treated with traditional methods, with a reduction in the need for return trips to the operating room. These data suggest that fibrin sealant is a suitable alternative to traditional fixation methods in pediatric autografting.
