Observational StudyCardiopulmonary bypass management and acute kidney injury in cardiac surgery patients.
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) ensures tissue oxygenation during cardiac surgery. New technology allows continuous registration of CPB variables during the operation. The aim of the present investigation was to study the association between CPB management and the risk of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). ⋯ To reduce the risk of AKI after cardiac surgery, aortic clamp time and CPB time should be kept short, and low hematocrit and periods of compromised blood flow during aortic cross-clamp time should be avoided if possible.

ReviewChronic post-surgical pain following gastrointestinal surgery: Protocol for a scoping review.
Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) significantly impacts people's lives, affecting both socioeconomic aspects as well as their rehabilitation after surgery. Yet, CPSP remains an under-researched field. The prevalence varies depending on type of surgery, which highlights the importance of surgery-specific research. This scoping review aims to investigate CPSP following gastrointestinal surgery in order to map out incidences, risk factors, and impact on quality of life (QoL) as well as identify gaps in research. ⋯ The planned scoping review will map out the current evidence about CPSP in adults following gastrointestinal surgery. We will identify gaps in research that can support the development of further research into CPSP after gastrointestinal surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialAn ultrasound-guided serratus anterior plane block with continuous local anaesthetic infusion and epidural analgesia for rib fracture pain.
We compared analgesia with an ultrasound (US)-guided serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) to thoracic epidural analgesia (EA) with continuous local anaesthetic infusion in patients with unilateral multiple traumatic rib fractures. EA often carries contraindications in patients with multiple rib fractures (MRFs), whereby having alternative effective methods to treat rib fracture pain remains important to patient care. Thus, we hypothesised that both regional anaesthetic techniques would provide effective pain relief. ⋯ SAPB with continuous local anaesthetic infusion is an effective alternative to treat rib fracture pain when EA is contraindicated. We found that SABP significantly reduces pain in patients with unilateral MRFs, although EA achieves better analgesia over the first 12 h following the block.

Hazardous alcohol consumption and perioperative complications in a cardiac surgery patient. A retrospective study.
We investigated the prevalence and effects of hazardous alcohol consumption on perioperative complications in cardiac surgery patients. Preoperative hazardous alcohol consumption has been associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications in noncardiac patient populations. ⋯ Cardiac surgery patients with a history of hazardous alcohol consumption are younger than other patients and are predominantly men. Hazardous alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of severe postoperative infections and ICU re-admissions.
