Randomized Controlled TrialContinuous Glucose Monitoring and the Effect of Liraglutide in Cardiac Surgery Patients: A Substudy of the Randomized Controlled GLOBE Trial.
The objectives of the current research were to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery and assess the impact of preoperative liraglutide administration on perioperative glucose control as captured by CGM. ⋯ Despite intraoperative sensor interruption, CGM seems an accurate method for semi-invasive, real-time assessment of blood glucose levels. CGM can provide a detailed observation of the pre- and postoperative glycemic trajectory, demonstrating increased time in range following perioperative liraglutide treatment compared with placebo.

ReviewThe Year in Aortic Surgery: Selected Highlights From 2023.
This article reviews the recent and relevant literature to the field of aortic surgery. Specific areas highlighted include outcomes of Stanford type A dissection, management of acute aortic syndromes, management of aortic aneurysms, and traumatic aortic injury. Although the focus was on articles from 2023, literature from prior years also was included, given that this article is the first of a series. Notably, the pertinent sections from the 2022 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management Aortic Disease are discussed.

ReviewThe Year in Perioperative Echocardiography: Selected Highlights from 2023.
This article is the eighth in an annual series reviewing the research highlights of the year pertaining to the subspecialty of perioperative echocardiography for the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia. The authors thank the editor-in-chief, Dr Kaplan, and the editorial board for the opportunity to continue this series. In most cases, these will be research articles targeted at the perioperative echocardiographic diagnosis and treatment of patients after cardiothoracic surgery; but in some cases, the articles will target the use of perioperative echocardiography in general.

ReviewAdvancing Precision in 3D Echocardiography: Incorporating 3D Markers to Aid Spatial Orientation.
The incorporation of 3D imaging into diagnostic and interventional echocardiography has rapidly expanded in recent years. Applications such as multiplanar reconstruction that were once considered research tools and required off-cart analysis can now readily be performed at the point of image acquisition and in real-time during live image acquisition for procedural guidance. ⋯ While this may be an effortless task for the seasoned echocardiographer, it can be a challenging task for echocardiographers who are less familiar with 3D imaging and multiplanar reconstruction. This article describes the utility of using 3D markers to aid in image interpretation.

ReviewBlood Pressure Management for Hypotensive Patients in Intensive Care and Perioperative Cardiovascular Settings.
Blood pressure is a critical physiological parameter, particularly in the context of cardiac intensive care and perioperative settings. As a primary indicator of organ perfusion, the maintenance of adequate blood pressure is imperative for the assurance of sufficient tissue oxygen delivery. ⋯ Nonetheless, uncertainties remain regarding blood pressure goals, and there is no consensus regarding blood pressure targets. This review describes the determinants of blood pressure, examine the influence of blood pressure on organ perfusion, and synthesize the current clinical evidence from various intensive care and perioperative settings to provide a concise guidance for daily clinical practice.
