Nonoperative management without nasogastric tube decompression for adhesive small bowel obstruction.
Although nasogastric tube (NGT) decompression is widely used in nonoperative management for adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO), robust evidence is lacking to support this routine practice. ⋯ While NGT decompression is a standard of care for adhesive SBO, selective NGT insertion for patients with persistent nausea or vomiting can become an option.

Women are disproportionately underrepresented in American academic surgery and surgical society leadership; we investigated the proportion of speaking roles held by women across a wide variety of surgical society meetings. ⋯ There is a wide range in speaking roles held by women at surgical society meetings, but an encouraging trend towards greater parity was seen overall.

Burnout is widespread among resident physicians, but higher resilience is associated with lower burnout. This study characterizes the relationship between resilience and burnout in medical (MR) and surgical (SR) resident physicians. ⋯ Increasing resilience and program support can decrease burnout, especially for high-risk subgroups.

Mental illness and depression can be associated with increased risk of suicidal ideation (SI). We sought to determine the association between mental illness and SI among cancer surgical patients. ⋯ Roughly 1 in 370 Medicare beneficiaries with cancer who underwent a wide range of surgical procedures had SI. An antecedent mental health diagnosis was a strong risk factor for SI.
