Syndecan (SDC) is a member of the heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) family. It appears to play a role in the aetiology of diabetic complications, with decreased levels of SDCs being reported in the kidney, retina, and cardiac muscle in models of diabetes mellitus (DM). ⋯ However, SDCs and the molecular mechanisms involved are complex and need to be further elucidated. This review focuses on the underlying molecular mechanisms of SDCs that are involved in the development and progression of the complications of DM, which may help in developing new strategies to prevent and treat these complications.

Long-COVID is a multisystem disease that can lead to significant impairments in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Following COVID-19 infection, abnormalities on pulmonary function tests (PFT) are common. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate for any correlation between PFT abnormalities and impairment in HRQoL scores following COVID-19 infection. ⋯ Among patients with an abnormal PFT, there was no temporal association with HRQoL scores as measured by EQ-5D-5 L, GAD-7, PHQ-9, and PCL-5. Among patients with a normal PFT, mobility impairment and anxiety may be associated with COVID-19 infection. Following COVID-19 infection, impairment in HRQoL scores is not completely explained by the presence of abnormalities on spirometry.

Evaluate the association between serum urea at admission and during hospital stay with return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and in-hospital mortality in patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). ⋯ In conclusion, increased serum urea levels during hospital stay were associated with worse prognosis in IHCA.

The distinction between lung adenocarcinoma-associated malignant pleural effusion (MPE) and tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) continues to pose a challenge. This study sought to assess the supplementary value of tumor markers in enabling a differential diagnosis. ⋯ CEA and CA153 in serum and pleural effusion, and Cyfra21-1 in serum emerge as biomarkers possessing supplementary diagnostic value in distinguishing lung adenocarcinoma-associated MPE from TPE. The diagnostic efficacy of CEA is superior to CA153 and Cyfra21-1. Conversely, the utility of CA125, CA724, NSE, and SCCA appears constrained.

We evaluated glycemia and triglyceride, hepatic, muscular, and renal damage markers, redox profile, and leptin and ghrelin hormone levels in COVID-19 patients. We also conducted statistical analysis to verify the potential of biomarkers to predict poor prognosis and the correlation between them in severe cases. We assessed glycemia and the levels of triglycerides, hepatic, muscular, and renal markers in automatized biochemical analyzer. ⋯ Patients with COVID-19 showed significant dysregulation in the levels of several peripheral biomarkers. We bring to light that a robust panel of peripheral biomarkers and hormones predict poor prognosis in severe cases of COVID-19 and biomarkers correlate with each other. Early monitoring of these biomarkers may lead to appropriate clinical interventions in patients infected by SARS-CoV2.
