ReviewGreater pre-operative anxiety, pain and poorer function predict a worse outcome of a total knee arthroplasty.
Around 10-30 % of patients are dissatisfied with the results of their total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This review aimed to identify and evaluate the predictors of outcome measured by the three domains of health-related quality of life (pain, stiffness and function). The focus was on pre-operative psychological factors as related to other patient-related variables. ⋯ II.

Kinesiophobia and depression affect total knee arthroplasty outcome in a multivariate analysis of psychological and physical factors on 200 patients.
To evaluate the effects of kinesiophobia on the outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and to investigate whether kinesiophobia represents an independent factor influencing the surgery success or whether the observed effects are driven by other physical or psychological aspects such as anxiety and depression. ⋯ IV.

What is the optimal valgus pre-set for intramedullary femoral alignment rods in total knee arthroplasty?
In total knee arthroplasty (TKA), intramedullary guides are often used for aligning the distal femoral cutting block. Because of the highly varying angles between the mechanical axis and the anatomical femoral axis (AMA), different valgus pre-sets have been recommended. The present study investigated the optimal valgus pre-set (measuring the AMA in long-leg radiographs or at 5°, 6°, 7° or 8° valgus) to align the cutting block perpendicularly to the mechanical axis. ⋯ Diagnostic study, Level II.

Effect of scapular external rotation on the axillary nerve during the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure: an anatomical investigation.
The first purpose of this study is to measure the distance between the axillary nerve and the exit point of K-wires placed retrograde through the glenoid in the setting of an arthroscopic Latarjet procedure. The second objective is to evaluate whether manual external rotation of the scapula alters that distance. ⋯ Cadaveric study, Level V.

An evaluation of the effectiveness of medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction using an anatomical tunnel site.
Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction for recurrent patellar instability has gained popularity, and anatomical and biomechanical studies have recently altered our operative techniques. The aim of this study was to report the clinical outcome of this new anatomical MPFL reconstructive technique and investigate whether correlating factors could be identified. ⋯ Case series, Level IV.
